Permutations going into the last day in terms of CL qualification
Okay so we’re pretty much there, but there are still scenarios in which Bournemouth qualify for CL football instead of us. Thought I’d cover the permutations here, so everyone knows what could happen on Sunday.
We go into Sunday 3 Points ahead of Bournemouth and we have a Goal Difference of +10 whereas they have a Goal Difference of +4.
Let’s start with the positives:
If Liverpool win or draw against Brentford, we qualify, regardless of Bournemouth’s result.
In this scenario we would finish fifth if Villa win or draw, but would finish fourth if we win and Villa lose due to our superior goal difference.
But what if we lose?:
If we lose against Brentford, Bournemouth would have to beat Nottingham Forest to have a chance to overtake us.
If Bournemouth win they would finish level on points with us and they would have to overcome a goal difference of 6 to beat us to fifth place.
What happens if we finish level on points and goal difference?:
If we lose and Bournemouth win, and Bournemouth also finish on the same goal difference as us, then the next tie breaker is Goals Scored.
Bournemouth have scored 5 less goals than us as things stand.
Mathematically this means that Bournemouth would have to score at least 5 goals to have a chance of finishing fifth if both teams were to finish level on points and goal difference.
For example if we lost 1-0 and Bournemouth won 6-1 then both teams would have the same goal difference (+9). But Bournemouth would overtake us and finish fifth by having scored more goals than us during the season.
What happens if we finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored?
Yes, there is a scenario where this can happen. For example if Bournemouth win 5-0 and we lose 1-0, both teams will be tied on points, goal difference and goals scored.
The next tie breaker is head to head points, which we would also be tied on with 3 each. (We beat Bournemouth at Anfield and they beat us at the Vitality)
The next tie breaker is head to head AWAY goals. We are also tied with 2 each. (We scored 2 at the Vitality and they scored 2 at Anfield).
Therefore it would come down to the final tiebreaker which would be a one game PLAYOFF at a neutral venue to see who finishes 5th and qualifies for the CL.
I think I speak for most of us when I say let’s hope that it doesn’t come down to that considering both teams form right now!
