There is no magic in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

I’m going to start this by saying that I’m not a great writer and this will probably be kind of choppy but bear with me. Also spoilers for most of Christopher Nolan’s new film.

Across the movie we see 10 different magical things or things that do not exist in our world. The Cyclops, The Laestrygonians which for sake of not typing that every time I’ll just say Gonians, Circe, The shades from the underworld, I guess Charybdis, Scylla, The Sirens, Calypso, and Athena.

Lets look at all of these monsters in more detail.

  1. The Cyclops - A huge lurking giant who unlike the Cyclops featured in the book seems to have less “humanity” and is just an animal or creature. No wine scene and no “Nobody“ this thing is just some animal. Still something we don’t have in our world, but not magical.
  2. The Gonians - This is the first unexplainible instance of magic we see. These big ogre like things are making trees move. You could say that oh the trees weren’t moving it was just a thick forest but I choose not to believe that since we saw them move. This is magic number one.
  3. Circe - Undeniably magical. This is magic number two. She turns the men into pigs.
  4. Shades - Magic number three. Shades from the underworld.

5 & 6) Charybdis and Scylla - Could represent losing people to the rocks and the water, but I choose to believe that they are magic number 4 and 5 for now at least.

  1. Sirens - You could argue they aren’t magical but their voice thing seems a little too powerful to not be magic number 6.

  2. Calypso - Calypso is decidedly not magical as it’s revealed her powers only come from the probably hallucinogenic lotus flower she feeds ody.

  3. Athena - Depending on how you interpret the movie, Athena is revealed to be a symbol of his guilt for murdering an innocent, as we learn that the innocent and “Athena” are one and the same. Probably his conscience, not a god, not magical.

  4. Adding this last in the list because I almost forgot, the island with the cows where his crew betrayed him and died because of Zeus is magic number 7.

By now it seems pretty clear that there is magic in this movie. 7 pieces of it to be exact. But I’d like to propose a different solution. Remember this is what he told Calypso while under a hallucinogenic lotus for multiple years. I think this is his brain rationalizing what really happened. That he lost all his men either at war or at sea, that he couldn’t save them. Let’s look at these so called magical events again in a new light.

Athena - The only confirmed one, a manifestation of his guilt.

Shades - His guilt as to the many people who he lost in the war.

Sirens - This is just conjecture but I think his lust for women other than his wife, maybe Calypso.

Circe - Circe reminded him what his men had become, what the cast offs from Troy had become, they had become the men from the sea, eating, pillaging.

The sun gods cows - ”It’s not my fault my entire crew died I warned them besides it was all fated to happen anyway right guys”

Charybdis and Scylla - The deaths at sea and from crashing into rocks.

Gonians - This is a big stretch but stay with me. in the beggining we see the young boy Sinon get stabbed and killed by these brutes while they were powerless to stop him stuck in the wooden horse. The Gonians were literal brutes who trapped ody with trees while he had to watch his men die. See the connection? Eh, I’ll work on that one but I think I have the general idea right.

The Cyclops - I have absolutely no clue and this is complete and utter speculation and probably is wrong but maybe the walls of troy. When he was stuck in Troy trying to open the gate for fear of his life that must have been really traumatic. So this is the manifestation of that. He‘s stuck in a cave with a man eating giant trying to get the door open.

Now we come to the big question, why, why did he do this. Why did his brain trigger this as a defense mechanism. I believe that there is 2 options. The first option, the one I originally believed is that he’s just traumatized that all his men died. But the second option, the one I believe now is that in the war he learned that gods weren’t real. He violated Zeus‘s law, he killed innocents, to no punishment. And he realized there are no gods. Which means that maybe he wasn’t in the right when he went to this war. Maybe Agamemnon wasn’t in the right when he sacrificed his child. Maybe his whole life has been a lie. What’s easier to believe. That everything you’ve ever known has been wrong, or that you met a cyclops.

One more thing. I noticed that near the end of the movie he says the people from the sea are the cast of Troy war people. I think by this point he’s remembered the truth, and the lotus has worn off. At this point he know that gods are not real. I can’t prove this, but I’m pretty sure.

Thanks for reading this piece of word vomit, if you liked this please don't try to find more on my profile this is the first thing of its kind I’ve done. Any suggestions, edits, comment it this is kind of rushed so I understand.

MOD POST - An Update to An Update to the Subreddit Rules (Spam + Removing the Al ban)

Hi. Turns out Strangelove was lying to us and there will be no bomb. Bummer. However we did learn that the popular ham brand spam is in fact not ham nor is it meat. It condensed milk mixed with the blood of newborns mixed with a cold bud light then tubed into a pink sponge, blended, then chilled. Unfortunately this may be what led to us moderators growing so weirdly as humans to the point of not even being humans anymore but more similar to the original thing from the movie The Thing not the remake the old one the remake was trash. Anyway we have corrected the issue but now realize that the rules of our subreddit ban Al. Now we used to get our spam from E1331 but now that he's being forced to work on silksong 3: the reckoning we are getting our kick of baby blood sponge spam from Weird Al. Unfortunately since all Weird Al generated content is banned, he refused to work with us due to discrimination. So in order to maintain our status as higher beings so we can read these words alone, we need to change this rule. Moderators out.

MOD POST - A correction to a correction of a previous mod post.

You may have seen the previous mod post, about the free speech ban. That was a mistake. Us mods have grown as people. We now understand it is not you redditors that are the issue. It is the human race. You may have misunderstood something in the earlier sentence, that we have grown as people. We have, but literally not mentally. In fact we've grown in such weird biologically inconsistent ways I'm not even sure we can be considered human. Anyway all that to say, we are now working with Dr Strangelove on building a bomb that can blow all biological humans. We've already gotten trump to sign off on it, and considering the way things are going thats really all we need. Expect nuclear decimation in the next 10 hours. If you wish to be spared, please proceed to your closest 18 world dungeon entrance. They will be highlighted on your minimap. Oh you don't have a minimap? Haha loser. Mods out. (This is also a joke post no hate to the mods or anyone else I just had a stupid idea and decided to follow through on it. My personal opinions on the recent discourse are absolutely not the ones that you would think from this post. Just tryin' to make a couple more ppl laugh.)

MOD POST - In regards to the discourse of recent discourse:

Hi. As a community, we've decided that maybe we were a little too hasty with this "free speech" thing. I mean, if you lowlifes want to deface us glorious moderators, question us even, why should you be able to speak? Why should anyone besides us be able to speak at all. We've decided to keep a hitman in all of your houses. Yes we know your houses, as we have tracker viruses hidden on all porn sites. Don't try to deny it, we know. Anyway moving forward if you speak against us moderators, then the hitman will hit you in your vocal cords then immediately give you top tier medical treatment everywhere except your vocal cords. We've also decided to instate some new rules:

  • Whatever speaks against mods is an enemy
  • Whatever is a mod or speaks for mods is a friend
  • No redditor shall speak against mods
  • All redditors are equal but some redditors are more equal than others

(This is a joke post no hate to the mods or anyone else I just had a stupid idea and decided to follow through on it. My personal opinions on the recent discourse are absolutely not the ones that you would think from this post. Just tryin' to make a couple ppl laugh.)

Need help with my first PC build.

Hi. I'm someone looking for an at home pc setup for preferably less than or around 1000 dollars. I would want pretty good graphics, a good cpu, and around a terabyte of storage. Preferably 16 gb ram as well. I mainly use firefox with many tabs, which I use to download many gb of shows and games. It would be mainly for gaming/watching tv. I'd be willing to splurge a little on a good monitor so that cost is separate. The games I play the most are neverness into everness, a variety of indie games, (eg. Balatro, silksong), Valorant, and BOTW on eden emulator. Thanks so much for any help you can give me.
