International PhD Studentships in UK | Any Success Stories or Advice?

Hey folks!!

Just wondering if there are any international students here who’ve managed to get PhD studentships in the UK, especially through SGSAH or the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP).

I applied recently but got rejected, not even shortlisted for an interview, which honestly stings because my profile matched the project perfectly. I’ve got solid experience and a deep understanding of the topic, so I’m trying to figure out if this is just how competitive these schemes are, or if international applicants rarely get through.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s gotten one, or knows someone who has, just to get a sense of how realistic it is for international students to land these opportunities.

Also, any tips, strategies, or “insider wisdom” on how to strengthen applications for these kinds of studentships would be super helpful. I really want to pursue a PhD, and I feel like I’ve got the right background, but clearly I need to figure out how to make my applications stand out.

SGSAH PhD studentship

Hey everyone, I’m an international student thinking about applying for one of the SGSAH doctoral studentships in Scotland. I’ve been looking at the pre-defined projects that already come with full funding attached, but I’m a bit lost on how the funding side works for non-UK applicants.

Couple of things I’m trying to figure out:

  • Do home students usually get priority over internationals when they’re handing out awards?
  • Is there a cap or quota on how many international studentships they give out each year?
  • Roughly how many international awards are actually available in a typical cohort?
  • And since international tuition fees are higher, does that make it less likely to get funded compared to home students?

If anyone’s gone through this process or knows how SGSAH handles it, I’d really appreciate some insight. I’m seriously considering applying for one of the projects, but I want to know what the realistic chances are before I dive in. Thanks in advance!

Studentship competition (UK)

I have applied to a few PhD studentships (open to and fully funded for home and international students). I want to understand how competitive the process is (I know it is difficult to get in, but what if the uni is not famous like Oxbridge and the project is niche?). What the realistic chances of success might be (have applied to unis like Nottingham/Abertay/Surrey/De Montford). Can someone also please tell me if home applicants are preferred over international ones?
