Apply for outside line? Sub tech? Or cable splicer?

Honestly just looking for some feedback as I am open to any of these.

I have underground electrical experience.

Do you guys ever in the lineman union ever wish you got into a different role within the trade such as outside line? Sub tech? Or cable splicing?

Can you still make good ass money and storm chase as a cable splicer or sub tech?

Thanks

Reasons you have seen young lineman apprentices/ groundman wash out

Why do these guys wash up?

Physically demanding trade?

Long hours with traveling?

Book work?

Hazing from the Jws?

Am I getting fucked or am I entitled? overthinking?

Not going to name any of these companies job sites or the name of my local to remain anonymous basically

I was at one of the biggest electrical contractors in the country, and I was doing a lot of hands-on work and learning a lot from the great JWS teaching me I was able to get in the lifts get in the trenches all sorts of stuff the only time I was doing bullshit is when it got slow and if I was doing it, everybody was doing it. I really like that company and have nothing bad to say about it. The only problem was the job site was extremely far from my house sometimes I was driving 2 1/2 hours to get home and an hour to get there

I ended up getting called from a Project Manager of one of the smallest companies in our local to work on a job for the same pay and hours way closer. I am working with a bunch of shop rockets that will sit when laid off and am doing about 60 hours a week right now very close to my house. The only problem is, I am not learning anything and I feel like I only got hired to be a spot the guys in the lift since it is a requirement on the site I have only been here about a month and it seems I’m the only person that only spots. everybody else gets a turn in the lift and they switch off spotting and being in the lift the apprentice I am working with barley lets me bend any pipe I maybe bend 10-15 pieces a week with the scrap and he doesn’t even put it up but he checks it and he says it looks good then it gets tossed I mentioned it to my foreman and he just said “ all the pipe is exposed it’s gotta look good” so we need the apprentice to do it and what kinda annoys me but I mean I get it is that the-other cw is working with a JW and teaching him a lot and he’s in the lift all the time and I said something about that aswell and he said he’s a JW it’s his job to teach him and they are doing non exposed pipe. I wish I could be working with him I get bored spotting and don’t learn as much as I want to.

Another thing that concerns me is my local from what I was told has more cws (pre apprentices) then JWS in the local which I believe him because there is a shit ton and he goes to all the meetings. I was told by my hall that 2000 people apply and the class size is barely above 70 and it’s only once cycle a year. I did the math and there’s about a 5% chance to get in. So it is very competitive. I have met cws/ces that have never gotten in and I have met some that got in after 6000 hours. I don’t get why there’s so much competition when all the other unions in the city pay more. I got some union in the family and there union is straight apprentices the other family members union and has a time limit for the Pres until they get indentured. (Not any longer than 1 year) for his union. I am concerned that I won’t get the apprenticeship might get laid off and not learn anything when this job ends. I have met a bunch of cws who have been in for 2-3 years and haven’t gotten in. There’s a route to become a jw with the cw path but you have to pass a test that gets harder every 2000 hours without schooling and do that 6 times until you have 12000 hours then your expected to pass the jw state test with 0 schooling. I live close to two states and the other state has locals that take on only apprentices and don’t have cws and does multiple cycles a year and takes on a lot more then my local. I just don’t know what to do. Go to a different local? As cws we are allowed to apply to different locals to take the apprenticeship test so we aren’t stuck our local for the only option.

Am I entitled? Should I shut my mouth?

Thanks anything helps
