Questions about Hiring Process

Questions about Hiring Process

yo guys I took this call a few days ago and Im getting a little frustrated about this onboarding process. drove from San Diego to 611, paid my dues, and was expecting more info from the company. the lady that I’m communicating with at the company hasn’t been able to tell me when or where I’ll start work. She scheduled a drug test and told me to wait 2-4 days for the results to come in. Is this a normal hiring procedure for a groundman? This is my first call and I’m currently in limbo until the drug test results come in. I know some people on the subreddit were saying I’ll be doing concrete work for project Jupiter but i haven’t heard anything from the company.

Journeyman here

Hey guys, I’m a JY in California, recently I started making guides for those of you that are trying to navigate the trade. Just doing it because I had literally nothing to go on when I started out 15 years ago. Feel free to peruse at your leisure.

I’m honestly just curious at this point

Why is no one taking this call in the past two days? Are they an unreliable company or is it because of the pay?

When the job is over, do they bounce it to something else?

Moving from SoCal to NorCal or Oregon.

I’m planning on moving from SoCal to NorCal or even Oregon. I want to get into groundman work there but im not sure if I could get work out there. I don’t want to move away and not have work. Does anybody have experience with this?

Interview with SWLCAT.

I recently passed my aptitude test with SWLCAT and have an interview scheduled next week in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with IBEW Local 1002. My question is, if I interview well, will I be placed on a waiting list to be picked up through Local 1002, or could I also be selected by another local, such as Local 66? Thank you.

First Union Job

Hey brothers,
I just wanted to introduce myself and ask for a little guidance. I recently got my groundman ticket out of Local 776, got my Class A CDL with no restrictions, and all my certifications ready to go.
I decided to sign the books as a traveler for Local 876 up in Michigan, and things moved fast—I got a call the very next day. I start tomorrow morning doing civil construction work for a substation (pouring concrete). The schedule is 6 12s and a $125 per diem, so the money is absolutely fantastic for my first call. I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity. Coming from a non-union background, the brotherhood and the structure of the union are exactly what attracted me to organize in. I’m proud to be a member, but since tomorrow is my first day ever on a union jobsite, I want to make sure I start off on the right foot. Any advice?

Unemployment

How does unemployment in the union work? Especially if you’re not working in your home state?
I want to know so I know I can keep the bills paid between layoffs and getting another groundman call.

Question book work

The book work in a program is known to be difficult and a lot of apprentices drop out because of it. How does one (prepare) to to stay on top of it and what have you done that works?
