So, is it love or not, Jiji?

Chapter 230 was the new 092 for many fans. The mood that Monday and Tuesday was so bad...

But now, with the great step Aira has taken, it's worth looking at 230 with a new lens.

Let's take a closer look.

Jiji and Momo in 230.

Jiji had been able to resume his friendship with Momo very quickly and with little difficulty. There doesn't even seem to be any trace left of the resentment that Momo used to feel towards Jiji due to little Jiji's past taunts. Moreover, fond childhood memories of her and Jin survived Momo's memory loss. Everything seemed to be going well from Jiji's point of view!

https://preview.redd.it/8jbs11bpca9h1.png?width=545&format=png&auto=webp&s=401afddb0d1a9bd59cef2eb37ad5869ba31dfb9b

Jiji goes with the flow, avoiding conflict, and Jiji's approach to show Momo that he likes her couldn't have been more different from Aira's: Aira used a lot of physical contact initiated by her. Jiji was never so upfront with Momo because Momo would have hit him if he had dared to go that far. Something very extraordinary and not initiated by him had to happen for Jiji to be able to touch her.

Jiji used to flirt with all the other girls without commitment. In contrast, he communicates to Momo his feelings under a mask of jokes and playful flirting but also accompanied by gestures of genuine care that demonstrated commitment. Jiji transforms the energy of his butterflies in his stomach when she is close to him into effusiveness, enthusiatic wit.

Until Jiji started telling Tiny Momo: you're precious to me. But Momo is now back to normal size.

In Six Curses arc, everyone seems resigned to the fact that Momo has lost her memory, including Jiji. Nobody asks why did it happen. Perhaps Jiji accepts this situation as the price they paid for Momo to return to her normal size. So Jiji doesn't force Momo to remember, and waits for things to unfold.

In the aquarium, every time Jiji jokingly mentions the idea of changing the vibe to one more appropriate for a date, Momo rejects the proposal. Jiji's energy encounters a potential barrier and becomes asymptotic. He cannot reach her. Jiji's energy is out of phase with Momo's.

https://preview.redd.it/dc16ul79ca9h1.png?width=672&format=png&auto=webp&s=2858c41eddccc1e122097c4e9f36ff421666a973

Then, Momo shows vulnerability to Jiji, confessing the gloom she was constantly feeling. And she says:

>... curiously, when I'm with you, Jiji, my mind is at ease. Why is that? (Ayase to Enjoji, 230).

https://preview.redd.it/vo0jtfqeea9h1.png?width=401&format=png&auto=webp&s=4ffeb28390df233a05ae87d39ca19974c1cdefcd

Momo was implicitly expressing a sincere praise. But Momo's words and tone expressed that she was looking for a rational, not an emotional, answer. Momo's curiously and why is that? were not rhetorical. Her words conveyed sincere rational thoughts about her condition. (It will be very interesting to listen to the acting of Wakayama san next year!!! [you know, manga chapter 092 😉]).

Now Momo's amnesia is working against Jiji. Momo doesn't remember the moments they shared together in chapter 092, when he was able to help her counteract Kashima's curse, nor when Jiji comforted her when Tiny Momo was fading away. From Momo*-after-Izumo*'s point of view, Jiji had barely returned to her life and not enough meaningful interactions had happened between them.

There was no knowing glance from Momo inviting Jin to "rhyme" romantically with her either. No smile. Momo just looked toward the window of the aquarium's water tank, instead of looking Jiji in the eyes.

Contrast: when Momo wants to connect with Okarun, Momo wants Okarun to look her in the eyes, because she offers a sincere, meaningful connection [even during the memory loss phase], and expects the same sincere connection from the other person.

Momo, the Gyaru who never lowers her gaze, has only lowered her gaze with Okarun.

https://preview.redd.it/ydz9m04wfa9h1.jpg?width=1067&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa4bb0a220816e7147db0171eb9da96b0e92db64

But Momo's gaze wasn't focused on Jiji, her gaze was wandering on the aquarium tank, without lowering her gaze.

How was Jiji taking Momo's words and actions?

Let me bring out the heavy artillery to explore his feelings. There's a song called Piensa en mí (Think of Me...) [link to YouTube if you want to listen to it]. It is a plea for a loved one. The song (translated) says:

>If you have a deep sorrow, think of me.
If you feel like crying, think of me.

Momo's words and actions were telling Jiji that Momo was not thinking of him, that she was not considering him as a refuge when she was having a deep sorrow, or feel like crying. In Momo's most vulnerable moment, when it seems Jiji is her only refuge, when he is the one who asks her how she feels, where it seems Okarun has failed to be Momo's refuge, Momo doesn't cling to Jiji. Jiji's still just a friend to her.

https://preview.redd.it/2a3wou0pea9h1.png?width=451&format=png&auto=webp&s=beb326c68d2fb6043b556345f1965f3eff0abeaf

The relationship between Momo and Jiji reached an equilibrium as quickly as it was restored. Jiji had all the energy necessary to transition their relationship from a friendly state to a romantic state, but Momo wasn't following suit.

At that moment in the solitary aquarium, Jiji began to realize that Momo didn't see him as someone with whom to share romantic affection. Teamwork, sharing jokes, laughter and memories, yes, but that's it.

(Interesting that Momo and Jiji were practically alone in the aquarium, while Ken and Aira were surrounded by people in the dinosaur exhibit.)

Then Jiji makes a bold attempt.

Jiji steps between Ayase and the aquarium glass, as if to say "Momo-chan, I'm here. I'm here for you".

Jiji tries to turn Momo's rational question into a rhyme, so he does what Momo used to do with Okarun: to communicate affection by means of physical touch. Jiji grabs her hand.

https://preview.redd.it/e7p73k5kga9h1.png?width=745&format=png&auto=webp&s=6402bbc2f8f9f2fe12bb21248ea1c16bbe60cf0f

And at the same time, Jiji looks her in the eyes, and answers Momo's rational question with:

>... probably just cuz I'm a moron, yeah?

A rhetorical statement that, on the one hand, seeks to soften the initiative of grabbing her hand and, on the other, words that still leaves the door open.

Jiji hid his "because you're precious to me", just when a direct look at Momo could have reaffirmed that what he was saying was true.

https://preview.redd.it/ue2m5y1ama9h1.png?width=667&format=png&auto=webp&s=4c415c1b67c5e9be0d968bbd713b67428c1026aa

Jin postponed exposing himself to the risk of being upfront and in turn not being reciprocated by Momo. He had hope of inviting Momo to "rhyme" romantically with him, progressively.

Momo reacted with surprise and said...

>Maybe.

231: a phase of denial begins.

The next chapter reveals that Momo took Jiji's gesture very calmly.

But then Momo gets tired of holding hands with Jiji.

Don't think for a second that I'm gloating over Jiji's suffering.

Jiji manages to relieve Momo's mysterious chest pain. But Momo still doesn't believe it's because Jiji has a special ability, so Jiji seems to recall the moments when he alleviated Reiko Kashima's curse. Not even a gradual, step-by-step approach worked for Jiji.

Jiji was needing to invest more and more energy to try to convince Momo without a direct confession. The "activated complex" MomoJiji broke and returned to the initial state of just two friends.

The rest is history.

It seems everyone is going to experience a broken heart.

Who would have thought that Tatsu turned Okarun into a Schrödinger's Cat in Six Curses arc? Momo is still in love with him, but at the same time she has rejected him.

Okarun has already sung Think of Me. Tatsu wasn't going to let Okarun get away unharmed. Tatsu made Okarun go through a rejection by a loved one.

Momo's amnesia definitely broke Ken's heart at the beginning of the current arc.

Now, Aira's heart is broken, although she bravely stands firm. Jiji is next.

Momo has also already had at least two disappointments with Okarun in this arc.

In only one chapter (214), Momo went from being willing to listen to Okarun to feeling hurt and distrustful of him.

However, the tide has changed and things seem to be improving for Momokarun.

But new enemies have entered the scene.

Will Momo's heart be attacked again?

TL; DR:

Jiji already knows deep in his heart that Momo won't reciprocate his feelings the way he would like, even though he told Okarun he was going to try harder to win Momo's love, before being swallowed by the brachiosaurus 🦕🦕🦕. At the same time and in other place before the attack of Seal Man Blago, Aira also knew deep down that Takakura wasn't going to reciprocate her feelings.

Thanks for reading!

If you know any heartbreaking song about someone pleading the loved one to think of him, please feel free to share it.

Peace 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽!

Jiji already had the opportunity to save...

The Mongolian Death Worm was going to eat Momo.

I was re-watching Cursed House arc, and I realized that, technically, Jiji already had his chance to be the sole protagonist in saving Momo from being devoured by a monster, twice (although the second time Jiji had just been possessed by the Evil Eye for the first time, and Momo's second rescue from the Mongolian Death Worm was practically a side effect 😬).

This was awesome, Jiji!

Now that I think about it, it's been a "fair game" between Jiji and Ken. Both have had the opportunity to save Momo's life many times.

Ken and Jiji have shown affection for Momo in different ways and during different difficult moments in her life. They both have rescued Momo and helped her to survive when she has exhausted all her options. And Tatsu has been giving both Jiji and Ken wholesome moments with Momo during the slice-of-life moments in the manga. But Momo's heart has always chosen Ken, before and after the Izumo incident.

With Jiji it's been different. When Jiji's heart is almost overflowing with love for Momo, Momo responds to him with logical questions, logical statements or friendly compliments that in turn do not invite him to "rhyme" romantically with her, or when he's about to say something, Momo falls asleep.

Poor Jiji. Tatsu has made him suffer all this time regarding his relationship with Momo, the author has kept him in limbo.

On the other hand, with Okarun, Momo is always very emotional. She's always inviting Ken to rhyme with her in an emotional way.

https://preview.redd.it/9ty3ghabtj8h1.jpg?width=1331&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16ee6170482b936cad378f4929177be597349330

About the times Momo has received help or reassurance...

When Okarun is unable to help, Jiji has been there for Momo.

When Kashima's curse was afflicting Momo, and she was exhausted, very sad and angry, when Okarun was in coma, Jiji helped Momo to counteract the curse and to train together in the use of "offensive Ki".

When Tiny Momo was fading away, Jiji comforted and reassured her.

Poor Tiny Momo.

When Momo*-after-Izumo* was nervous and confused, or angry with Okarun, Jiji helped her to distract herself, comforted her and relieved the pain.

And we have to acknowledge Jiji for being honest, telling Momo that she had a friendship with Ken and the others.

In the same way...

... when Jiji is unable to help, Ken has been there for Momo.

In Evil Eye arc: when Jiji was losing control over his own body and Evil Eye wanted to harm Momo, Okarun was always there to save Momo. Moreover, Okarun took the lead to resolve the situation once and for all, with ingenuity, risking his own life, finally being able to change the "contract clauses" that Jiji "had signed" with Evil Eye, so that Evil Eye would not harm anyone in the family who had decided to offer compassion to Evil Eye, including Momo.

https://preview.redd.it/nmxc7in73j8h1.png?width=929&format=png&auto=webp&s=54b0fd9c2b3b0140282fb8bb789e0e983d52e926

Without the clever solution provided by Okarun, the Jiji-Evil Eye combo that defeated Red Bum would never have existed.

Space Globalistst: in the fierce battle against the Advance Unit, Aira and Jiji were fighting insanely hard to allow Momo to advance to the goal, trusting in Momo's power and intelligence. Jiji fulfilled his duty as "offensive tackle" against a flank of the Advance Unit, but that duty prevented him from getting close enough to help Momo. Fortunately, Flash⚡Turbo Okarun arrived, strengthening Aira and Jiji with Seiko's advice and saving Momo, when all seemed lost, thus changing the course of the battle.

Leadership!

In Danmara: The omake of Vol. 19 tells us that Momo was going to invite Jiji and Aira to help search for Zuma in Renjaku. However, I think it wasn't Momo's fault that Aira and Jiji didn't intervene in Danmara. It was Aira and Jiji who apparently were not showing much interest in the search for the Second Kintama, and I think that took Aira and Jiji out of the game. Momo was the only one who actively cared about helping Ken find his Second Kintama (another reason to dismiss the AiraKen ship, by the way 😅. Okarun owes everything to Momo that he is complete down there). That's why Momo ended up in Danmara.

Omake 19.

Anyway, it was nice that Momo let Aira spend time with her friends and that Momo let Jiji had his football practice.

But the rescue operation that Okarun led to save Momo from Danmara certainly represents one of Okarun's greatest feats of ingenuity, prudence, organization of teamwork, and at the same time quick action, in the whole manga. (Although apparently Sanjome expected him to do that, from afar.)

In Kozuka Knives: Okarun separated from "Team Shimane" in order to stay and support "Team Kamigoe". Tiny Momo felt proud when Okarun told her that he was going stay in Kamigoe to help Kouki and Rin. She let him go.

Finally the plot was entrusting Jiji with the responsibility of being Momo's main guardian. It was Jiji's turn to take on the role of savior and tide changer. And he played his part brilliantly, saving Seiko, with the help of Evil Eye. Jiji couldn't prevent Momo's memory loss, but he gave her the opportunity to not have lost her beloved grandmother.

Now, in Amusement Park arc, the enemy has managed to somehow subdue Jiji. Once again, Jiji has lost control of his body and couldn't help Momo. A damn brachiosaurus 🦕🦕🦕...

how did this happen?

(Mr. Tatsu will have to give a good technical explanation of what went wrong with him.)

Meanwhile, Okarun and Aira, thanks to the opportunity that Barberasu has given them, and thanks to Okarun's renewed leadership in defying Barberasu's order to immediately withdraw to the barbershop, the study about the layout of the amusement park that he did, as well as Ken's ingenuity in using the scarce resources at his disposal in combat, and his faith in Momo, are now rescuing Momo.

It's interesting to see how the rescues of Momo haven't exactly been performed by a single rescuer, requiring effective teamwork.

Even Palps wants the \"love square\" to end.

Thanks for reading everything that came to my mind after re-watching the anime, which was a lot 😅!

This post is like a celebration of the anniversary of the anime's second season!
