Blatant Favoritism/ Grade Manipulation
Backstory: Professor is straight up manipulating grades based on favorites. I was’t a favorite but now I am depending on the Profs mood. I had a rough start to the semester (I’m working 20 hours a week, have 2 kids under 5 and I’m a full time STEM major). I was struggling with balancing it all and got behind in their class the first couple weeks (nothing crazy, just missed 2 homework assignments). I’ve only missed 1 lab/class the entire semester, I show up on time, I go to office hours, and now do my homework early and finish on time or early for weeks now. I’ve turned into a favorite.
Grade manipulation: If we do these grueling packets of problems we get extra credit. The prof told us at the beginning of the year and reiterated these are 3/0 points. I do them all, I get 3/0 points until recently - I’ve been working extra hard to improve and I got 5/0. I thought surely it was a mistake but the favoritism is SO obvious. I shot our study group a question asking how much they got- there are 6 of us total. 4 of them are this profs favorites, me and the other student immediately went on the shit list. They responded almost simultaneously - all the favorites get 5/0 and us on the shit list get 3/0.
Dilemma: If we ask in class prof states “they’re all worth 3/0” so us non favorites getting 3/0 think that’s it and the favorites getting 5/0 stay silent. Why would they risk getting less EC points and speak up? I know I wouldn’t.
Advice: How can I bring this up? Do I leave it be in fear the prof thinks I’m challenging them? Or continues to give favorites 5/0 and knocks me back down on the next one? I’m only asking because this is the first class ever I might not pass, I have a 3.8 GPA (only adding bc I work extremely hard but this class has kicked my ass lol)- it’s major prep for me and not passing with a C will severely set me back as I’m set to graduate and transfer this semester. I am clinging onto my 72. I also just think it’s super scummy that now I’m a favorite I got a 5/0. Thoughts?
