Rewatching Gilmore Girls and Realizing Lorelai Isn’t Always the Good Guy

After re-watching Gilmore Girls, I’m realizing something I never really paid attention to before: Lorelai speaks so poorly about Emily constantly. Like, almost any chance she gets, she throws in a jab, insult, or embarrassing story about her mother.

I’m on the episode where the Dragonfly Inn gets featured in a magazine article, and Lorelai makes negative comments about Emily during the interview. Then it actually gets published, and she has to bring the article to Emily’s house because it became such thing, due to the comments about her mother in it. Watching that scene this time made me realise Lorelai is not always the good guy. Having the relationship she does with her mom with one thing, but she seems to use any chance she can to say something about it.

Don’t get me wrong, Emily absolutely has her flaws and can be controlling and critical. But Lorelai is also incredibly mean about her sometimes, even in situations where Emily isn’t actively doing anything wrong. I think when I was younger, I automatically sided with Lorelai because she’s funny and relatable, but rewatching as an adult/mom makes the dynamic hit differently. Now this of course does not take into account how mean Emily can be to Lorelai often as well they had such a toxic relationship.

It’s interesting how your perspective on characters changes depending on where you are in life. Anyone else notice this on rewatches?

One of the most underrated parts of Gilmore Girls is how much the music quietly shapes the emotional tone of the show, and Carole King is such a huge piece of that.

Obviously everyone recognizes “Where You Lead” as the theme song, but I don’t think it gets enough credit for how perfectly it sets up the entire series. The lyrics alone basically are Lorelai and Rory—this idea of unconditional support, following each other through anything, and choosing your own path even if it’s unconventional. It’s warm, a little nostalgic, and deeply rooted in that mother-daughter bond.
What’s even cooler is that they didn’t just use the original version, they re-recorded it as a duet with her daughter, which mirrors the generational relationship at the heart of the show. That choice feels so intentional and honestly kind of genius.

And then there’s Carole King actually appearing in the show as Sophie, the music store owner. It’s such a subtle touch, but it adds this additional layer like the voice of the show is literally living in Stars Hollow.

Her musical style in general, soft rock, folk, piano-driven melodies really fits the cozy, small-town aesthetic so well. It gives the show that timeless feel, like it could exist slightly outside of reality. Even when scenes get chaotic or emotional, the music keeps things grounded and comforting.

I’m curious how other people feel, do you think the theme song adds to the emotional impact of the show, or is it just nostalgic at this point? And did anyone else not realize for way too long that Sophie was Carole King?
