Hey everyone! I’m working on an illustration project/storyboard about a young girl living in a chaotic, loud household who uses a letter from a long-distance friend as a "portal" to a blissful world.

The story is told in 12 pages with only 1-2 lines per page. Right now, my lines feel a bit "AI-generated" and stiff. I really want the text to feel more poetic, raw, and human to match the visual shift from a "sharp, grey reality" to a "soft, vibrant dream."

The scenes include:

The stress of a loud home.

Finding a "bridge" in a letter.

Memories of swinging in the sky, running through mountains, and laying in a boat among lotus leaves.

If you’re a writer or just good with words and want to help me rephrase these beats, please DM me! I can send you the specific lines along with my sketches so you can see the vibe I'm going for.

Thanks in advance!

I’m an illustrator currently working on a children’s storybook project (ages 8–12).

Over the past week, I’ve been spending time with elderly people in old age homes, collecting their stories, memories, and experiences. The goal is to turn these real moments into a narrative illustrated book for children.

One thing I noticed consistently is how deeply people above 50 are connected to letter writing, and that really stayed with me.

So I’m thinking of building a story around:

the feeling of writing letters

how people would sit, think, and choose the right words

the waiting for a reply

the joy or relief of reading a letter

and how different this feels compared to today’s texting

I want children to experience that emotion through the story.

I’ve started developing a few story ideas (still at the logline stage), but I’m not fully confident about them yet. I feel like they need more shaping.

One idea:

A young girl (8–10) wants to write to her sister that she misses her, but “I miss you” feels too plain. She steps outside, notices things like rain, salted mangoes they used to share, and other small memories. Through these moments (which I plan to show visually), she finds a more meaningful and poetic way to express herself in the letter.

  1. After doing some mischief, a young boy(7-8) get in a fight with his mom, struggling to sort things with her because of his ego, and nit getting the right words, the gight gets worse. He then follows his grandmas advice to write a handwritten letter using the paper to say the sorry , his ego wont let him speak out loud.

  2. In a house fractured by constant echoes and fights, the young girl child uses and cherishes the letter she received and after reading it , she goes to her own imagintaive blissful world where as mentioned in the letter, written by her best friend maybe , they play together, go to that pkace this place do this, basically i will show the visual illustrations of the blissful moments shared with her friends which is weitten in the letter, when the letter ends, chaos and fights continues in the background (comes back to reality) , then she read the lette again this time she continues to live in her imaginative world even when the letter ends. She keeps the letter safely and reads it again and again whenever she needs a releif .

I have a couple more similar ideas, but I’m still figuring things out.

Would really appreciate:

your thoughts on this concept

whether this theme would connect with children

suggestions on improving or developing the story

or any new ideas I could explore

Thanks 🙂
