I need reassurance, guidance and advice
Hello,
We have a 2.5yo boy, to whom we both speak our native languages to. For me it’s French, for her it’s Russian. We speak English at home. We’ve been living in France since he was 1.
Now we’re moving back to Germany.
He understands both French and Russian perfectly but mostly only answers in French. We’ve been trying to make it playful that he practices Russian, like Papa says this but how does Mama say it ? He understands the notion of language and says he speaks both, and lately this little game is starting to work and he’s been saying a few Russian words too. So he’s doing fine, we just need to keep at it I guess.
But now I worry about moving to Berlin where his whole world is going to change and people won’t understand him and speak a new language.
I guess he’ll pick it up but I worry about his 2 native tongues (and maybe English, but that matters less he’ll have plenty of time to learn that in Berlin, which is very international). I think it will require a lot of extra effort to make sure he doesn’t forget French and Russian and worry about it.
