I am enrolled for a Degree in Psychology does it make sense for the career paths I want?
I got accepted in SNHU Psychology and right now I work as a Pharmacy Technician. The most I've made as a Pharmacy Technician in Maryland is about 27 an hour which was from being overpaid due to shift differentials and a pay bump from getting Certified. I feel like Getting a Psych degree will not really provide me more money initially, but will provide me more opportunities and an interesting curriculum. I have a lot of transfer credits so I came into School with all gen eds done and all elective credits have been enrolled in SNHU previously while attending my job.
Some careers I am looking into are teaching here or overseas, Being a Digital Marketer, Being a Healthcare Manager: might look into Masters in Public Health or Masters in Health Administration, and being a Data Analyst or Data Scientist.
I only have a degree right now as an associates of Health Science which was from me previously going to nursing school and dropping out. I feel like many employers just value a full Bachelor's Degree and that it will open doors, that being said, the jobs I listed are all what I am interested in. I do not want to be a therapist or psychologist at present, and have a bunch of clients while being on a 1099 and literally having back to back counseling sessions, that sounds incredibly tiring. Also, another common one I don't want to do is Human Resources, I have no interest in screwing people over to just protect the company in the end. At my last job I did interact more with HR and some were incredibly unprofessional. And, at the end of the day they weren't really there to help people.
A bachelor's opens up the door to teaching, which could be very nice but also I have heard you really need good time management because grading papers and lesson planning can be tough; I have met a lot of former teachers. Going over seas might be annoying cause I get lonely easily. Marketing and analytics seems interesting because I like being creative and helping companies, I also work part time taking pictures for a company. Lastly I saw an interview of a man who became a Data Scientist after getting a psych degree and going to Grad school. It's definitely the career I know the least about what they do on the day to day. I do know it's highly technical involving SQL and Python and Machine Learning. However, If I ultimately decided on doing Data Science I would most likely get a minor in Math.
Is it so crazy to think getting a Psychology degree is very valuable when previously I was told only to get something that directly teaches job skills? Many Computer Science Majors can't get jobs easily due the job market for them. Why get an Undergrad in Math when AI can job do math problems quicker? The online degrees I was on the fence on personally were Marketing, Math, and Psychology, and Comp Sci. The main reason I chose Psychology was because I have around 90 credits towards it due to previous schooling. I would only have 60 if I did Marketing, I also find the Psych classes really interesting. My friend from a previous job just got a degree in Film also highly valuable, and also my other Anthropology Major friend works in Marketing. I hate AI.
TLDR: Does getting this degree make sense when it doesn't directly train me on the job skills? I am worried about AI when it comes to everything. I am adult learner I am very opinionated. I feel like I don't want to specialize in Counseling, but really enjoy creative work myself. I want work life balance, even though I could see myself being a case manager for a little bit.
