Why were 4 files removed from war.gov/UFO? Current file count = 158 (17-May-2026)

The file count for Release 01 of the UFO files on war.gov/UFO has changed. It had 162 files on 8-May-2026. The file count has been 158 for the last few days.

The site does not seem to have an index or change log.

Anybody know what was removed and/or why? I haven’t found any of the user-run archives that are publishing change reports; do you know of any?

Thanks!

Re-edit:

The link below was exploring a previous file removal. It seems that additional files may have been removed since it was written.

There are standards for these kinds of file drops - the government literally wrote them. Standard protocol would be to include a change log explaining what was changed and why. This kind of wobbly file management on a public site is disappointing.

Edit:

Alien Auditor has a pretty grounded explanation on https://alienauditor.substack.com/p/review-the-missing-ufo-files, thanks u/baconcheeseburgarian!

NASA Apollo Image Archive for NASA-UAP-VM* images from war.gov/UFO photos.

Original images from https://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/apollo/catalog/70mm/magazine/?46

Image ID's :

AS12-46-6842
AS12-46-6846
AS12-46-6847
AS12-46-6848
AS12-46-6849

The image ID's are from the Manifest Reference File Path field in the metadata from the war.gov/UFO photos, extracted using exiftool

The images from war.gov were zoomed in/marked up, the original images do show the artifacts. The archive also includes other images with similar artifacts, it makes for interesting browsing.

What kinds of film artifacts might these be?

These are images from the Apollo moon landings that show some interesting anomalies in the sky. They are included in the UFO release on war.gov/UFO.

I'm not trying to argue what these are, I'm curious about whether the anomalies look like recognizable film or scanning artifacts, and where I could find more information, especially examples of similar artifacts from film photography, scanning workflows, or archival restoration.

Thanks for your help!
