Turo reopened my closed damage claim weeks later and now I’m in subrogation hell
Used Turo for a long term rental and honestly will probably never use them again after this experience.
Had a damage claim opened against me for cosmetic stuff on a 14 year old vehicle. Initially the claim was basically closed/no liability, then weeks later it suddenly gets reopened after the host uploads “new evidence.” Nobody clearly explained what changed or why. Then the claim amount changed dramatically. Now they’ve moved it into subrogation.
The most frustrating part is the process has been insanely disorganized. Different reps saying different things, poor communication, and it genuinely feels like nobody fully reviewed the evidence/timeline I submitted. I put together a full PDF with timestamps, photos, and explanations and I’m pretty convinced nobody actually looked at half of it.
The car was also out of my possession for almost a week during the trip because of an airbag issue and the host/family were driving it during that time. Somehow that became almost irrelevant in the final review.
What bothers me most is that they can apparently reopen a previously closed claim without really notifying you clearly, pay the host, then come after your insurance afterward. As a renter it feels like you have very little protection if a host decides to aggressively pursue damage claims.
Maybe other people have had great experiences, but this turned into a massive headache over alleged cosmetic damage with no accident event ever occurring.
Just a warning for anyone renting through Turo: document EVERYTHING obsessively because if there’s a dispute, the process can get messy fast and I definitely did not feel like Turo had my back as a customer.
