Does my reference from my current employer have to be hr or can I use one of my shift leaders as a reference?

I have applied for a role and have completed the tests required for the role and was passed onto the next stage which was a strengths based video interview. It has been over a month since the last update on this. I am just wondering if it would be bad for me to email asking for an update?

Just not sure and don't want to harm or affect my chances.
