new web novel I am trying to start

This is the first chapter on a series I'm trying to get started... let me know what you think

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead like angry hornets as Elias led the group of fifteen restless eighth graders through the Ancient Civilizations wing. His voice, flat and tired, as he talked about the significance of Mesopotamian civilizations while half the kids stared at their phones.

“And here we have a rare example of a Mesopotamian fertility idol. Notice the exaggerated hips and breasts, symbolizing—”

A boy in the back snickered. “She thicc though.”

Elias’s shoulders slumped. He’d given this exact tour seventeen times this month. Same jokes. Same blank stares. Same crushing feeling that his life was slowly disappearing into these glass display cases.

By the time the last kid shuffled out, the museum had gone quiet. Elias stayed behind for inventory, his least favorite part of the job, but at least it was peaceful. He moved through the dimly lit storage room, clipboard in hand, when something caught his eye on the bottom shelf.

An old oil lamp. Bronze, heavily tarnished, with strange swirling patterns etched into the side. He was certain it hadn’t been there yesterday.

Frowning, he picked it up. The moment his fingers touched the cool metal, the air grew thick. A low hum filled the room, and then a voice—not from the lamp, but from everywhere—spoke directly into his mind.

"Mortal. You have awakened me. Speak your wishes. Three shall be granted."

Elias nearly dropped the lamp. His heart hammered against his ribs. “W-what?”

"Three wishes. Choose wisely."

He swallowed hard, his voice barely above a whisper. “Are… are you serious? This must be some kind of prank.”

The voice answered immediately, calm and ancient, echoing through his skull like it was carved from stone.

"I do not joke, mortal. Three wishes. Nothing is beyond my power. Speak them."

He laughed nervously, running a shaky hand through his messy hair. “Right… okay. So if I wished for a million dollars, you’d just… give it to me?”

"Yes. Though gold and paper hold little meaning in the place I would send you."

Elias froze. “Send me?”

"The first wish is already forming in your heart. You do not wish for money. You wish to leave this world behind."

His mouth went dry. The voice wasn’t wrong. Every night he went home to silence, every weekend spent alone lost in the lore of long-dead worlds. This life… it felt like waiting to die.

Elias stared at the lamp, heart racing. “What happens if I make a wish?”

"Then it shall be so."

He took a shaky breath, gripping the lamp tighter. “Alright… I wish… I wish to be taken to another world; I wish for all the knowledge I need to survive in that world.”

The moment the words left his mouth, the air around him began to shimmer. The storage room lights flickered once, twice, then dimmed to almost nothing. Elias felt a strange pull behind his eyes, like the world itself was gently tugging at him.

"Wait, hold on—" he stammered, "I still have two more—"

"Your second wish has already been decided."

Before he could argue, a wave of dizziness crashed over him. His vision blurred, the floor tilting beneath his feet. It felt like his body was becoming weightless, like he was being pulled out of himself. His limbs grew tingly, then numb, and for a terrifying moment he couldn’t feel his own heartbeat.

The last thing he saw was the old lamp slipping from his fingers and clattering across the floor.

Then everything went white.

When sensation returned, it didn’t feel like his own body.

His skin felt… tighter. Warmer. Stronger. The flabby stomach he’d carried for years was gone. His arms looked lean and defined, nothing like the soft, pale limbs he was used to. Even his face felt different — sharper jaw, clearer skin. The awkward, forgettable museum worker was gone.

He was lying on soft grass under a massive, unfamiliar sky with three moons.

The ancient voice returned, softer this time.

"Your first two wishes are fulfilled. You stand in a new world. One year of training and all the knowledge you will need has been granted to you. Your body has been… improved… to handle the power that now flows through it."

Elias scrambled to his feet, heart pounding so hard he could feel it in his throat. He looked down at himself — the flat stomach, the toned arms, the way his clothes now hung looser on a completely different frame. His hands were shaking.

“What… what the hell just happened?!” he shouted into the empty field. “You ripped me out of my body?! That’s not what I wished for!”

The voice answered calmly, as if it had expected this reaction.

"Your original vessel could not survive here. The mana density in this world would have torn it apart within hours. This body was created for you — stronger, healthier, capable of wielding magic. Consider it part of your first wish."

Elias ran his hands over his face, feeling a sharper jawline and smoother skin. “This is insane… I look like a completely different person.”

He spun around, taking in the three moons hanging in the violet-tinged sky. Nothing looked familiar. The air itself felt alive, humming against his skin.

“Wait — you said something about knowledge and training. What does that mean? I don’t feel any different!”

"The knowledge has already been placed within you. It will surface when you need it. The year of training has also been granted. When you are ready, you will awaken with the skills of someone who has trained for a full year in this world’s arts."

Elias pressed his palms against his temples, breathing hard. “This is too much… I need a second to process this. My body… my life… everything’s just… gone.”

The voice returned, this time with a clear edge of impatience.

"You are wasting precious time, mortal. The window for your third wish is closing. Speak it now, or it will be lost forever."

Elias blinked, still staring at his transformed hands. “Wait, what? You never said there was a time limit!”

"Three wishes were offered. Two have been granted. The third must be spoken before the connection fades. Decide. Now."

Elias could feel it — a strange pressure building in the air around him, like the voice was slowly pulling away. His mind raced. He’d always dreamed of this moment in theory, but standing here in a brand new body under three moons, everything felt too real, too fast.

He swallowed hard, heart hammering.

“Okay… okay. My third wish…”

Elias’s mind raced. Images suddenly flooded his thoughts — different races from this world, creatures and people he somehow instinctively knew about. Wolf beastkin, fox spirits, dragonkin, elves, all the races of this world… all of them flashed through his head in seconds.

He didn’t have time to overthink it.

“My third wish…” he said, his voice steadier now, “I wish for two powerful companions to travel with me. A wolf beastkin woman and a nine-tailed fox hybrid. Make them strong, loyal, and able to properly train me in this world’s ways.”

The air grew deathly still.

Then the voice spoke, sounding almost… amused.

"An interesting choice. So be it."

The moment the wish was spoken, two glowing magic circles appeared on the grass in front of him. One pulsed with deep crimson energy, the other with bright golden light. Both began to rise slowly as silhouettes formed inside them.

Elias took an instinctive step back, his pulse thundering in his ears.

The crimson circle flared first. From it stepped a tall, powerfully built woman with silver-gray wolf ears and a bushy tail. Her body was toned and athletic, clad in dark leather armor that hugged her curves. Sharp golden eyes locked onto Elias immediately. She looked like she could snap a man in half without breaking a sweat.

Right after her, the golden circle dissolved, revealing a stunning fox girl with long, silky crimson hair and nine luxurious tails swaying behind her. Her features were softer, more seductive, with elegant fox ears twitching atop her head. She wore flowing silken robes that somehow still showed off her figure.

Both women looked around in clear confusion, their eyes eventually settling on Elias.

The ancient voice spoke once more, this time addressing all three of them.

"You have been summoned here by his wish. You are bound to him as companions. Your purpose is to guide him, protect him, and train him in the ways of this world."

The wolf girl crossed her arms, ears flicking. “So we were just… called here? For him?”

The fox girl tilted her head, nine tails curling gracefully. She studied Elias with curious amber eyes, a small smile playing on her lips.

Elias stood frozen, mouth slightly open, suddenly very aware that he was now standing in front of two incredibly beautiful women who had just been magically assigned to him.

The ancient voice spoke one final time, sounding almost relieved.

"My task is complete. His wellbeing is in your hands."

And just like that, the presence vanished. The air grew still and quiet. The three of them were alone under the light of the three moons.

The wolf woman was the first to speak. She looked Elias up and down, clearly unimpressed by his modern earth clothes.

“You… you’re dressed strangely. What are you wearing? And why do you look so weak?” Her voice was direct, almost aggressive. “You don’t even smell like you belong here.”

The fox girl stepped closer, her tails flicking with curiosity. She tilted her head, studying him with her sharp amber eyes.

“He doesn’t seem like he’s from any kingdom I know of…” she said softly. “Your scent is completely foreign. Where exactly are you from? And why did you wish for us specifically?”

Both women were now staring at him, waiting for answers. Elias suddenly felt very small despite his new, improved body. He opened his mouth, but no words came out at first.

He was standing in another world, talking to a wolf girl and a fox girl who had just been magically bound to him.

How was he supposed to explain any of this?

Elias rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly very self-conscious. “Okay… this is going to sound insane, but here goes. My name is Elias. I’m not from this world at all. I came from a place called Earth. I worked at a museum — it’s like… a building full of old artifacts and relics from our history.”

The wolf woman’s ears flattened. “A moo-zee-um?”

The fox girl looked equally lost. “Artifacts? So you… dug up old things?”

“Sort of,” Elias continued, trying his best. “I was studying an old lamp, and this… voice, this being, offered me three wishes. I wished to come to another world, I wished to understand magic and this world’s common sense, and my third wish… was for both of you.”

The two women stared at him in stunned silence.

The wolf girl let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “You’re telling us you’re from another world, and you used your final wish to summon us? Just… two random women you’ve never met?”

“Not random,” Elias said quickly, his face heating up. “I saw… possibilities. I chose you two because I needed strong companions. One to protect me,” he nodded at the wolf woman, “and one who could heal and support,” he looked at the fox girl. “I’m going to need a lot of help here. I’m not exactly a warrior.”

The fox girl studied him for a long moment, then gave a small, almost amused smile.

“Well… this is certainly not how I expected my day to go.”

The wolf woman sighed deeply, rolling her powerful shoulders.

“Great. So, we’re stuck with a clueless otherworlder who doesn’t even know how to swing a sword.” She looked him up and down once more. “you're going to get us killed”
