I recently came across a desi landlord proudly saying he selectively avoids renting his basement to Muslims and Black tenants because they are “bad renters” and “cook meat,” and that he only rents to certain religious backgrounds.

What shocked me wasn’t just the discrimination — it was how casually and proudly he spoke about it, like he had discovered some genius strategy.

This is exactly the kind of regressive mindset many of us hoped to leave behind, not recreate here. People can have preferences about cleanliness, noise, smoking, etc., but rejecting entire communities based on religion or race is just toxic and damages the social fabric of the country.

Honestly, situations like this are why some people become frustrated about immigration and cultural integration. The problem is they then generalize all desis, when in reality it’s a subset of people carrying discriminatory attitudes into housing and real estate.

If you have prejudices, keep them to yourself. Don’t normalize discrimination in the rental market and then brag about it openly.

And yes — if you’re reading this and recognize yourself in it, I’m talking about you
