hi everyone! i’m starting my freshman year at fsu in the fall and im so excited! i’m currently in my high school band playing clarinet, and while i don’t want to study music, i want to continue playing in the concert setting.
i don’t want to be in the marching chiefs. i recently heard about the sinfonia, and i have been trying to find out more information, but what i could find isn’t very informing.
is the sinfonia a club or a class? from what i’ve seen i think its a class but i am not entirely sure. i know that its an orchestra, but is it exclusively music majors? i’ve always wanted to be in an orchestra but have never had the chance.
when are the rehearsals and are they manageable? i really enjoy receiving and practicing hard music, but if it starts to get in the way of my academics it starts to become less of a hobby and more of a burden.
is the music that the performers receive fun and exciting? i love playing music but when the pieces are just random arrangements with no reason its just not the same
and my most important question is are the directors passionate and do they care about the ensemble? i am pretty sure this is a non-audition class, so anyone could join (but i don’t think completely new people would join), which means that the directors might not be as interested or enthusiastic about us. my current director has, what seems like, almost entirely lost his passion for us and it’s draining. it takes the fun out of everything we do and he seems to hate us. i understand that he might be burnt out or tired, but he just isn’t the same from what i remember him to be in the past years.
thanks so much in advance and sorry for so many questions!!
