117kg walker with sudden severe shin pain after faster 8km walks — shin splints or something worse?

I’m around 117–119kg and have been walking consistently for about 20 days now. I usually do around 8km daily on asphalt roads and had been feeling fine overall.

Recent walks:

- Day 18: 8.1km in 1h32m

- Day 19: 4.6km in 51min

- Day 20: 8.3km in 1h16m (much faster pace than usual)

Today I started walking again and my shin pain became horrible almost immediately. The pain is mainly along the shin area and gets worse when I walk.

A lot of people suggest shoes, but I recently switched to ASICS Hyperspeed and honestly they feel very comfortable with good cushioning.

I walk almost entirely on hard asphalt roads and I’m currently around 117–119kg.

Has anyone experienced this after increasing pace/intensity rather than distance?

How long did recovery take and what actually helped?

Hey everyone,

I’m around 117 kg and for the past 2 months I’ve been consistently walking 6–8 km per day. I also take 2 rest days per week, so I’m not walking every single day.

Most of my walking is on hard roads (concrete/asphalt).

Recently, I’ve started getting pain in my shin area (front/inner lower leg). It’s not extreme, but it’s definitely uncomfortable and feels like it could turn into something worse if I ignore it.

I’m trying to lose weight and improve my fitness, so I don’t want to stop completely — but I also don’t want to risk injury.

Details:

6–8 km walking on active days

2 rest days per week

Surface: mostly hard roads

Pain location: inner/front shin

Started after ~2 months
