I want to share my point of view on Indian casteism based on my personal experiences.
I come from a lower-middle-class family. In my school, out of 26 students in my class, several belonged to the SC/ST categories. However, many of them came from very wealthy backgrounds—their parents were IAS officers, big businessmen, or held well-paying government jobs. My family, on the other hand, is self-employed and we often struggle financially. From 9th to 12th grade, our average annual school fee was ₹45,000. While my parents struggled to pay this amount, my wealthy classmates from reserved categories received a full refund of their school fees, along with additional government financial aid. It felt incredibly unfair because my family actually needed that financial support, yet we received no help.
This disparity became even clearer during college entrance exams. I scored 169 marks but did not get selected. Meanwhile, a student from a reserved category got selected with a score of 70. The irony is that we studied at the exact same coaching institute; I paid the full fee out of pocket, while they received a government scholarship. Now, they will also get their full college tuition waived. It makes me question: who truly deserved that support? A struggling general-category student, or someone from a wealthy, privileged background who happens to have a reservation certificate?
Don't get me wrong—I am not entirely against the idea of uplifting people. I acknowledge that discrimination exists, and it is wrong. Everyone deserves an equal opportunity. However, my point of view is that the government should first focus on providing free, high-quality educational resources to everyone so that all students start on a level playing field. When it comes to selection and scholarships, aid should be based strictly on financial background (economic status), regardless of whether a student is General, OBC, SC, ST, or PwD.
What I realized during high school and college is that the Indian education system inadvertently teaches discrimination and casteism to children. When a child enters school, they are forced to become aware of caste differences not through social interactions, but through school fees, scholarship forms, and entrance exams.
This begs the question: who is truly responsible for keeping casteism alive in the newer generation society, or the education system itself?
