Stevenage Rent Situation

Hi everyone!

I’ll be relocating from India to Stevenage soon for work and I’m trying to understand the rental situation there. I’m a single female professional and will likely be looking for either:
- a private room in a clean/shared house, or
- a small studio/1-bed if affordable.

Ideally looking for:
- safe area
- close to town centre/train station or good public transport
- furnished place preferred
- budget-friendly options for a working professional

Would love recommendations on:
- good areas to stay in/avoid
- average realistic rent expectations
- best websites/Facebook groups/apps to use
- any advice for someone moving to the UK for the first time

Also open to flatshare suggestions if anyone knows good professional house shares in Stevenage.

Thanks in advance :)

My previous post got some hate because I didn’t include enough details, so I’m reposting with proper context.

I’m currently working in India with a salary of ₹25 LPA. I may be getting an internal transfer to the UK through a typical IT consulting firm (one of these: TCS/Accenture/Cognizant). The location would be Stevenage, which I understand is close to London but not exactly London.

What I’m trying to figure out is:

What minimum salary in the UK (£) would make this move financially sensible?

By “sensible,” I mean:
- I can live comfortably (not super frugal survival mode)
- Cover rent + expenses in/around Stevenage
- Still save a decent amount (comparable or better than what I could save in India)

From what I’ve read, UK living costs are significantly higher — rent alone can be ~7–10x compared to India in many cases (Numbeo) — so I want to understand the realistic salary benchmark.

Would really appreciate insights from people who’ve:
- Done internal transfers from India to the UK
- Lived in/around Stevenage or similar towns near London
- Compared savings between ~₹25 LPA in India vs UK salaries

Not looking for generic answers — trying to understand realistic take-home, expenses, and savings potential.

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working in India earning ~25 LPA, and I’m considering an opportunity in the UK. I’m trying to understand what would be a reasonable minimum salary to maintain (or ideally improve) my lifestyle, and what I should realistically negotiate for.

A bit about me:
- ~4 years of experience (will complete 4 this August)
- Role: semi-tech / non-tech (closer to management consulting, not software engineering)
- Currently based in India

I’ve heard mixed things about cost of living, taxes, and overall savings potential in the UK, so I’m a bit unsure whether the move makes financial sense unless the offer is strong enough.

Some questions I’d really appreciate help with:
- What UK salary would be roughly equivalent to 25 LPA in India in terms of lifestyle/savings?
- What should be the bare minimum I should consider before making the move?
- What’s a good target salary range for someone with ~4 YOE in consulting-type roles?
- How much room is there typically for negotiation?
- If you’ve made a similar move, how did your savings and lifestyle change?

Also, if you’re comfortable sharing:
- Your role, experience, and salary in the UK
- Whether you feel it was worth moving financially

I’m especially cautious because I don’t want to move and end up saving less or struggling with expenses.

Would really appreciate honest insights 🙏
