[SBSA311/SRPL91] Interesting Gene Kranz Model

I’m in love with my new-to-me Gene Kranz reissue. The quality on this one feels top notch; perfect size, vintage style, love the history as this is a style that would have been worn/available for purchase and worn by US Troops in Vietnam and just feels like a cool representation of that era for Seiko.

What is interesting is that I bought it as a SRPL93, and have seen reference to the first 1K produced these in each color dial being JDM models. Mine was a bit confusing, as it is serial number 14XX (the last two digits are an even and exact number), but has the JDM specific markings, Kanji date wheel and packaging. I went down a rabbit hole and what I found was that for a few hundred numbers after the JDM specific block of production, a few hundred (I read some speculation that it was up to 400 or 500) JDM watches were sent out to “higher end” or flagship dealers and stores worldwide with the JDM packaging; allegedly once at the destination, the manuals would have been appropriately changed due to regional requirements; I saw this scenario referred to as a “hybrid” model. I don’t know how accurate that is, but it seems plausible and makes sense of the oddly specific watch/packaging/manual combo that I have, and the serial number of this watch would line up perfectly in such a scenario. I’d appreciate any insight into this?

I know there are typically “J” model overruns on parts and all that, but from what I gathered this one could be considered a JDM watch due to the “Made in Japan” on the case, dial, date wheel, etc. Regardless of what it exactly is, Im really happy with it and this one will be staying in my small but growing collection. I know it’s “just a Seiko 5” and not an original or legacy/high end model but I am a fan.

I’m mostly just trying to learn and see if the “deep dive” on research I did is accurate; I’ve never had nor handled a JDM offering before and the “hybrid” thing would make a lot of sense. What the reality is doesn’t matter in the long run, Im just genuinely curious and I know there are a lot of experts here (or at least many who know far more on Seiko/watches in general than I do, which is probably almost everyone).

I’m not really a fan of the bracelet, any suggestions on a Forstner or Islander or any other options?

Edit: I did indeed put the reference number for the silver dialed ones in my post title, apologies.
