I’ve had TMJ for over 10 years and whilst I wouldn’t say that it’s severely painful to the point where I can’t function, it does affect my daily life to some extent. For example, I don’t chew much when eating because chewing too long = soreness in my face.
When I’m stressed, I think I grind my teeth in my sleep, which might explain why I wake up with migraines about 5–6 days each month and have a few chipped teeth. Overall, it’s manageable as long as I don’t put too much strain on my jaw (e.g excessive chewing or massaging the area). However, I do feel like I live with a baseline level of pain of around 3–4/10 on a daily basis, so I’m not sure if this is something I should just continue tolerating.
I’ve been seeing an orthodontist who suggested Botox but I’m quite concerned about potential side effects. I’ve seen people mention developing jowls after Botox. My dentist said that this is unlikely after the first session, but long-term use could lead to sunken cheeks, which may or may not be reversible even after stopping Botox. I’m in my early 20s, so I’d prefer to avoid any premature facial changes like that.
For those who’ve had long-term Botox for TMJ, when did you first start and did you experience sunken cheeks or jowls overtime? Also, did you develop botox resistance?
I have an appointment booked at a local hospital and was told that the price would be around $200+, but I’ll also be going to Korea soon. From what I’ve researched, clinics in areas like Gangnam or Cheongdam (not the high-volume factory-style kind) seem to offer lower prices compared to getting it done here. I’m wondering if aesthetic clinics there might have more experience with this procedure and potentially achieve better cosmetic outcomes, compared to dentists here who may focus more on relieving pain.
For those who have done Botox in Korea, could you share your experience? Also, which brand did you use? (Xeomin, Allergan or local brands)
I’d also appreciate any other advice as well. TIA❤️
