NYU CS Joint Major vs. UMich Information Science (planning to transfer to LSA CS)
Hey everyone, trying to make one of the biggest decisions of my life and could use some outside perspective.
I got into NYU for their Computer and Data Science joint major (I’m assuming this is through CAS/Courant) and University of Michigan for Information Science, with a plan to transfer into LSA Computer Science once I’m there.
Quick context:
• I’m full pay at both — no financial aid, so cost is roughly comparable and not really a factor
• Post-grad goal is tech (SWE/product/data) or consulting (MBB/Big 4)
• I’m not set on one path yet, so flexibility matters
My hesitation:
NYU gives me a direct CS track in one of the best cities in the world with strong finance/tech recruiting, but I’ve heard the undergrad experience can feel scattered and the Courant program is hit or miss depending on who you ask.
Michigan Info Science feels like a safer landing spot, but I’m banking on a transfer into LSA CS that isn’t guaranteed — and if it doesn’t happen, does an Info Science degree hold up for SWE recruiting or MBB consulting?
What I’m genuinely unsure about:
1. Is the UMich CS internal transfer realistic if you’re performing well?
2. Does Info Science at Michigan close doors vs. a direct CS degree, especially for consulting?
3. Is NYC as a recruiting hub actually a meaningful edge for undergrad?
Would really appreciate any takes — especially from people who went to either school or recruited from them. Thanks
