F1 student trying to start a business before graduation — bad idea or possible?
Hey everyone, I’m looking for honest opinions/advice from people familiar with immigration, student visas, or small business ownership.
I’m an international student in Mississippi, graduating in May 2027 on an F1 visa. I’m also a college athlete. Right now I’m considering either applying for OPT or continuing with a master’s degree.
At the same time, I’ve been seriously thinking about starting a coffee brand/business. Since I’m aware of the limitations with F1 status and self-employment, I’ve been wondering how realistic it would be to structure the business under a U.S. citizen family member who lives in another state, while I mainly handle branding, logistics, suppliers, operations, etc.
My uncle lives in Pennsylvania and would essentially be the legal owner on paper, while I’d be the one managing most of the day-to-day work remotely and locally.
My questions are:
- Is this actually a viable/legal path or am I misunderstanding how this works?
- Would involvement in a business like this hurt future OPT applications?
- Could it create problems later for the adjustment of status or a marriage-based green card process?
- Are there safer or smarter ways international students usually approach entrepreneurship in the U.S.?
Not looking for legal representation here, just real-world experiences or guidance from people who’ve been through something similar.
Thanks.
