Is this space appropriate for a DXP4800 Plus?

Hi all,

I've got a DXP4800 Plus on the way and I have a couple of options for where to put it. This is my first NAS and I'm not very familiar with general heat and airflow restrictions so I'm looking for a bit of advice from seasoned pros.

I have this nook in my bookcase (solid wood) which has power and CAT6 cabling. It is physically big enough to fit the NAS with some room to spare but I don't know if this is too small in terms of airflow or whether it'll be fine.

Layout and measurements in the second pic, but to summarise:

  • the height to the shelf above is ~32cm (12.5 inches)
  • the shelf above can be moved up or removed if that's the main concern
  • the diagonal length from corner to middle of the circular cutout is 48cm (~19 inches)
  • the depth of the usable part of the wood platform is 30cm (12 inches)
  • the side of the 'full square' is 60cm (24 inches)

Would there be enough space for airflow? Is this a safe place to keep the NAS long-term, or is it likely to overheat? I do live in a pretty hot country but in the hotter months we tend to have the AC on during the day (yay solar power) so it's not like the room will be baking.

If it's no-go for the long term, is it OK to keep it there for a while (a few weeks?) until I get the other option sorted? The alternative is basically on my desk but the right cabling is not available there so I'll have to sort that out. Not a deal breaker but more inconvenient as I also lose desk space.

Thanks - and apologies to any carpenters for the hideous cutout, we basically had to do it in situ!
