Screentime and food issues at nursery
I just wanted some opinions on this. My 1 year old is having settling in sessions at nursery but I’m really worried about a couple of things.
Specifically, everytime I have been in, I’ve seen children running around with food in their mouth, either after snack or after activities involving food (once, the food from messy play was left out for ages and a child got into it, another time my baby was happily eating some food another child had taken from the messy play and deposited elsewhere). This has happened at least 4 times and each time I’ve pointed out to staff that the child is eating. I asked staff what they do to prevent choking and they told me they watch the kids to make sure they aren’t choking or leaving the table with food. This clearly isn’t true.
Before we signed up I asked about screen time and was told they don’t use it. Today when I went in, the babies were sat having their lunch with an iPad in front of them playing nursery rhyme videos (manic, dancing cartoon type stuff). I didn’t ask about it as my baby was really upset and I just wanted to settle him.
Generally, I’ve observed the staff don’t really talk to the kids (I’ve been there about 5 hours in total). It’s all practical and getting stuff set up, tidied up, giving instructions. Even when children are upset they don’t really try to console them.
Am I crazy or is this not ok? For reference, this is a nursery attached to a good fee paying school, so I had high expectations.
