IPL 2026: Performance of teams under different conditions (home/away, 1st/2nd half of league, defending/chasing, toss won/lost, day/night)

Some observations:

  1. The first and second half of the tournament might as well have been separate tournaments with different teams shining.

  2. Punjab dominated with an unbeaten streak but fizzled out after the halfway point.

  3. Gujarat peaked at the right time and topped the second half.

  4. KKR almost scripted a comeback story for the ages by coming from the bottom of the table to take the second place in the latter half.

  5. RCB and SRH get points for consistency. On the other hand, MI and LSG had a forgettable tournament in both halves.

  6. Home dominance in this season was not as obvious as some of the previous seasons. **The home team won 36 of the 69 matches played and visitors won 33.**

  7. After a season of being away track bullies, RCB emerged as the team with the fortress with 6 wins at home, a clear departure from their franchise history.

  8. MI, DC and LSG couldn't capitalise on the home advantage with only 2 wins in their home grounds.

  9. However, DC made up for it with their away performance by winning 5 games while traveling.

  10. **26 games were won by the team batting first, as opposed to 43 by the team batting second.** So, there was a clear advantage in chasing.

  11. GT have been the expert defenders while RCB the chase masters, both of them repeating these feats from last year.  Perhaps something both teams will take note of in Q1.

  12. Teams were clearly cognizant of the chasing advantage with only 12 teams opting to bat first in the toss. Of these, only 2 ended up winning (and one match was rained out).

  13. Speaking of the toss, DC were the luckiest of the bunch with 10 coins going their way (though they could capitalise on only half those games).

  14. Fortune hasn't been as favourable to SRH with only 4 tosses going their way. But they decided to be masters of their own destiny by winning an impressive 70% of the games they lost the toss in.

  15. Each team played two or three day games this year. GT and KKR won both the day games they played while SRH and MI lost all of theirs
