if you don’t know about this then you shouldn’t be in medicine

Met an attending recently who said “if you don’t know about this then you shouldn’t be in medicine” and as a first gen it got me thinking about what else there may be out there that I don’t know about.

So what is your “if you don’t know about this then you shouldn’t be in medicine”?

FM + Neuro

Has anyone built a FM practice with a neurology focus? I know it’s not generally one of the primary care specialties so wondering if anyone has done it before and what that looks like for them

FM + 1 COE

Wondering if someone could tell me about Care of Elderly +1 with FM. I imagine it’s not common but I’d love to know what they do, what their bread & butter cases are, inpatient or outpatient, etc.

Feeing shame

Not sure what I want out of this but need to get it off my chest.

I feel like I’ve been gunning for a specialty that idk if I want anymore. The residency is hard, the lifestyle can be good but isn’t always. It satisfies the life I pictured for myself as a physician maybe 60%. I’m torn because I don’t like anything else. Intellectually this is my lane. I’ve looked into dual applying but the second specialty is even harder to match and my resume is so obviously going for specialty #1 that I don’t know how to spin specialty #2.

I’m not sure if I’m down because I know this is a hard match but the thought of pushing myself this hard to end up in a specialty where none of this was necessary stings (and I know I’m not the only one going through that). How do you guys frame this in your mind? Feeling defeated.

PM&R day to day

Was hoping someone could give me an explanation of their realistic day in PM&R. What do you do? why do you like it? What is the patient population? What are your bread & butter cases?

Is this wrong?

I did an observership last summer and met an attending who offered me a week on their practice as well. I spent the week with them and really enjoyed it. I was thinking of emailing them to see if I could come back but their email isn’t online. I can figure it out based on the institutional email set up but is it wrong to reach out?

Is call, nights & weekends the norm?

Med student considering neurology and wanted to know if after residency is it possible to work 9-5 with no call, nights or weekend as outpatient neuro?

For those who will graduate residency at ages 37-40, can you give me some hope? Or would you recommend I look at residencies where I will finish at 35-36?

Feeling down because I’m not sure I can have the specialty I love and the life outside of medicine I want.

Edit: thanks guys for the great responses. I guess I should have added that I’m female so the reproductive clock is also freaking me out and playing a part in this decision

Who would you pick to add to your neuro research?

  1. Closest friend, not neuro, he would probably put in the work but I would worry about seriousness and following through on promises. And he loves AI which worries me

  2. A new friend, finds neuro interesting, never done research, very stressed personality, would have to hold her hand through the entire thing. Also can’t keep a secret to save her life so I’d have to be ok with everyone & their grandmother knowing I’m doing this project

  3. Acquaintance, is thinking about Neurosurg, busy travelling all summer with his gf. Outlined that he’d be interested in a project depending on who is involved but also that time is limited.

  4. Acquaintance, not neuro but has published a lot and some have been neuro related, graduating in a few weeks then going home to Europe. Has asked me to join a project she has going on but the journal she picked is not indexed. Her previous pubs are indexed.

*crossposting cause I’m desperate*

I need advice

For context I am a medical student.

So I started a research project as a solo narrative review and brought it to my supervisor. It was my first one and I wanted to do it really well so I followed (the applicable) PRISMA guidelines aside from registering on prospero and having a second person to screen articles.

I brought this work to my supervisors and they suggested I switch to a scoping or systematic review.

Now for the advice. I need to choose someone to include in this but my choices are slim. No one really likes neuro at my school so here are my options:

  1. Closest friend, not neuro, he would probably put in the work but I would worry about seriousness and following through on promises. And he loves AI which worries me

  2. A new friend, finds neuro interesting, never done research, very stressed personality, would have to hold her hand through the entire thing. Also can’t keep a secret to save her life so I’d have to be ok with everyone & their grandmother knowing I’m doing this project (I’m a very private person)

  3. Acquaintance #1, is thinking about Neurosurg, busy travelling all summer with his gf. Outlined that he’d be interested in a project depending on who is involved but also that time is limited.

  4. Acquaintance #2, not neuro but has published a lot and some have been neuro related, graduating in a few weeks then going home to Europe. Has asked me to join a project she has going on but the journal she picked is not indexed. Her previous pubs are indexed.

Goal is to do the bulk of this over the summer. Any advice is welcome.

Hi everyone! I am a medical student and I was wondering if it is better to diversify my neurology research topics or stick to one subspecialty?

Currently both my clinical and research experiences span multiple subspecialties individually and combined. Just wondering if breadth or depth is more appreciated when it comes to neurology.
