Knowing when to be firm and when to be soft?

How do you know when to be firm with students and when to give grace to them for just being kids?

On one hand you don’t want them to walk all over you, on the other hand you want to honor that kids are going to be kids.

How do you balance that as a teacher? How do you know?

Lunch and recess as a student teacher

How do student teachers handle lunch and recess when you aren’t very close with your co teacher?

Following the teacher around the playground during recess seems awkward (if roles were flipped I’d probably appreciate having some time away from the student teacher).

And for eating lunch, if we both need to eat at the same time, it feels weird forcing my co teacher to interact with me and equally awkward to deliberately eat somewhere else where they aren’t present.

For me, I look at lunch and recess like “free time” where co teacher and student teacher are allowed to be independent and not “a team”, but how to do that in a way that is natural, respectful, and not deliberately avoidant?

Would teacher decline a special parent request for classroom for next year?

Our son had a wonderful time this last year with his 3rd Grade teacher. It turns out that she will be teaching 4th Grade next year and my son was over the moon because of how much he enjoyed her class. We were also very impressed by how this last schoolyear went and we thought about requesting our son to be placed in her class again.

Are parent requests for child's classroom teacher acceptable? Or is it annoying and maybe a red flag? We know the teachers do a lot of work on their own to set up classrooms for the following year, but would this special request come back to bite us (or our son) in the butt?

Inclusion of emotionally & behaviorally disturbed

At my school, there’s a lot of conflict involving emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children. The district says they must be included in the school environment, however the impact on other students is extreme. Their violent or aggressive outbursts are sometimes traumatic for mainstream students, I’ve witnessed several incidents that triggered trauma responses in mainstream students with prior exposure to domestic violence, sexual abuse, and emotional/verbal abuse.

When paraprofessionals are absent, there is not enough support to corral the students in a way that maintains a calm environment in the entire school.

What is the solution for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed students in public schools? And why are consequences rarely (if ever) issued when their actions cause real harm to the rest of the students in the school?

When schools give opportunities to share anonymous feedback?

Is “anonymous feedback” really anonymous?

Sometimes I’m tempted to share concerns, however it always feels like I’m walking into a trap.
