Looking for a VPN alternative in UK
The recent UK crackdown makes me worried, anyone else dealing with this? I'm losing my patience. Half the VPN providers I used are now either blocked or unreliable, and the ones that still work get flagged as VPN on most sites I try to use. Resi or dedicated VPNs aren't much better, fraud scores are high and most sites restrict my access. Then there's the DPI side of things, ISP-level filtering is getting more aggressive, certain protocols just don't survive a session anymore.
I am looking around at what could actually work as a VPN alternative:
- Decentralised VPNs like Nym look interesting on paper but I still got the same protocol detection problem from what I can tell. Yes they are unbannable basically, but DPI is still a problem.
- Encrypted mobile proxies like Voidmob seem to solve the IP trust + DPI part since they sit on CGNAT and bundle VLESS Reality, but the pricing is honestly out of my range for personal use. Looks more like a business tool.
- VLESS/Xray self-hosted on a VPS, I keep reading this is the survivor in countries that DPI hard, but I'm not sure if it actually holds up long-term once your VPS IP gets flagged.
Anyone running this from the UK?
Tor obviously, but it's painful for anything other than browsing.
What I actually want: something that gets past UK ISP filtering, doesn't get flagged as VPN by every banking / social / shopping site, and doesn't cost £80/month. Feels like the choice right now is "cheap but useless" or "works but priced for businesses".
If anyone here has solved this for personal use without paying enterprise rates. Custom setups welcome
