MedTech career advice: Should I continue clinical experience for my MLS abroad goal or accept a higher-paying Product Specialist role?

Hi everyone! I’m a registered Medical Technologist in the Philippines who passed the boards in August 2025. I currently have around 10 months of clinical laboratory experience, and I’m torn between two opportunities. I’d appreciate advice, especially from MedTechs who transitioned into the diagnostics industry or pursued an MLS career abroad.

Option 1: known free standing diagnostic Laboratory – Medical Technologist
● ₱21,500 monthly salary
● Directly related to my profession
● Allows me to continue gaining clinical laboratory experience
● More aligned with my long-term goal of working abroad as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

The thing is, I previously declined their offer. I reached out to them again recently, and they reconsidered my application. Because of that, I feel pressured to accept. I’m worried about how it would look if I turned them down for a second time after asking for another chance.

Option 2: Corporation that handles mindray and architect – Product Specialist
● ₱24,000–₱27,000 monthly salary
● Products include Mindray analyzers and Abbott ARCHITECT systems
● A completely new environment and career direction for me
● Potential opportunity to develop technical product knowledge and explore the medical diagnostics industry

My biggest priority right now is money. The salary difference may not seem huge, but an additional ₱2,500–₱5,500 monthly would help me save more.

However, I still have a long-term goal of working abroad as an MLS. I genuinely want to pursue that path, but I also recognize that I need to improve my financial situation now.

One of my biggest considerations is career flexibility. I feel that transitioning from Medical Technologist to Product Specialist might be easier after gaining several more years of clinical experience, whereas returning to clinical laboratory work after spending years as a Product Specialist might be more difficult. I’m wondering if it would be wiser to build my clinical foundation first, then transition to a Product Specialist or Clinical Applications role later, potentially with more experience under my belt.

On the other hand, I don’t want to pass up a good opportunity simply because I’m afraid of trying something new. If the diagnostic laboratory weren’t an option, I think I’d be excited about the Product Specialist position because of the higher salary, new environment, and opportunity to learn. My hesitation mainly comes from the fact that it’s unfamiliar to me.

I’m also questioning whether I genuinely want to stay in the clinical path or if I’m holding onto it mainly because of my MLS abroad goal.

For those who have experienced something similar:

  1. Would you prioritize gaining more clinical experience first, or take the higher-paying Product Specialist role early in your career?

  2. Does having several years of clinical experience significantly improve your opportunities when transitioning to a Product Specialist or Clinical Applications Specialist role?

  3. How difficult is it to return to clinical laboratory work after spending a few years in the diagnostics industry?

  4. If your long-term goal were to work abroad as an MLS, would you consider taking a Product Specialist position in the meantime?

  5. Would you decline an offer again if you had already turned it down once and asked for another chance?

I’m trying to make a rational long-term decision rather than choosing based on salary alone, fear of missing out, or guilt about turning down an employer again.
Thank you!
