To me this is still a mainstream reference, but maybe a little deeper in terms of gaming.
The one reference that make think that Cole is a real gamer it's on TOS:

I mean ik Kojima is kinda known outside the gaming world, but the Big Boss reference made me think that he actually played MGS3, ik Kojima or Mgs are not a niche reference but it's not a mainstream reference either. Idk if there's some other gaming references or if he talks about this on interviews or something.
