Thinking about switching to eldar
Hey you all,
I am currently thinking about getting myself a second army, and I am heavily considering eldar. But since I am not sure if what I want eldar to be is what they actually are, I wanted to ask some people with experience and maybe someone here finds the time to help me out a bit.
First a few things about me. I started playing in November 2025. since then I have mostly been playing competitively and honestly I have never had more fun playing a game than with 40K. So I have spend quite a lot of time with playing Warhammer. I am currently playing Blood angles in liberator assault group. The main reason I started playing them is because they are red. I know. What a reason to play something xD sadly I have the feeling that they are not 100% my perfect army match.
What I like about the game so far.
I have two things about blood angles that I truly love. The first is their speed. I love being in control of the game and having the initiative on where and when to fight. The second thing is more about the game in general. I love Moment Tricks. There is so much stuff you can do in the movement phase other than moving the models in the face of the opponent. One example of this that I love is stringing. (At least I hope that’s how it’s called. Having one model up close for an easy charge and having the others quite far away, so I can manipulate how many models I have to base). I don’t know why, but I think stuff like this is so incredibly elegant, and I am sad, that that is one of the very few cool movement things I can do right now (due to my army and my skill). There are also two things I really don’t like about blood angles. First is that they feel kind of blunt. Basically all I do is push everything onto my opponent and try to kill as much as possible in the hops that he can’t kill all of me back. It fells like the main skill expression in blood angles is to decide when to go all in. And if you go all in you go ALL in. Fells kind of boing. The second thing is I hate stat checks. Both playing them and facing them. Sadly my blood angles are a huge stat check list. (I mean if have about 1000P 4++ models in my list).
So now about eldar.
My first idea of why eldar might be good for me is because of the two things I like about blood angles. The are fast as hell. And the are the champions of „cool movement things“
What I hope is that eldar have to do a lot of creative and cool things (preferably not just a set of 2 things I do in all my games) to win against my opponent. I like thinking about stuff. So the move creative freedom an army has, the happier I am.
Now to the main thing I need someone’s opinion on. A fined of mine told me „Eldar have a tool for every situation and every problem. The main thing about it is finding the right one“. Would you consider this true? Because if it is true that sounds amazing. I love being at fault for loosing my games xD I know that is probably also true for most of my BA games, but sometimes (looking at you 5 Cta‘n list) it feels like I can’t do anything but loose.
Sadly I also have some worries about eldar.
- I fear that I am just to bad of a player to play such a complicated army. I think I can swallow a 10-20 game loose streak playing a new faction, but I know I’ll start to get sad after that :(
- I looked at the data sheets of eldar. How the heck do you guys deal damage? I guess there are a few units (benshies and fire dragons for example) where I see them doing something. But the rest is just minuscule amounts of fire power.
- this one might be a stupid worry. But I fear that people will not like me because I play „a very op“ faction. I have the feeling that if I am not magically transforming into a world class player (which I am sadly not expecting any time soon) eldar will be as far of from bing op in my hands as it gets. But people seem to have stong opinions on eldar. Have you ever made bad experiences whid that?
- sadly Warhammer is a hobby that isn’t the cheapest one out there. So swapping army’s just to find out you don’t like that army, or you are simply to bad on it is kind of an expensive move. Have you ever switched army’s? How did you know it was a good idea?
Honestly one of the biggest problems I have is that I can’t simply hop into TTS and try playing eldar a few times. After about 20min of playing there I get so dizzy that I’m close to throwing up (one of my special powers is to get dizzy while scrolling down on a website, so I guess it isn’t much of a suprise that I can’t use tts :(
Thanks for reading all of this mess I wrote here. If you have any tips on how to proceed, or have any wisdoms to share, please do so.
Best regards,
Marie
