Dashcam buyers usually fall into one of these groups. Which one are you?

Honestly curious how priorities differ here. A few years ago, most people just wanted “a camera.”Now it feels like everyone has a completely different checklist. What ended up mattering more than you expected?

70mai Guide: Why Dash Cam Adhesive Mounts Fail and How to Prevent It?

If you've ever walked back to your car after a hot summer day and found your dash cam hanging lower than it was yesterday or just dropped off suddenly, you're not alone! Summer is the peak season for this issue. Let's start with a few simple things that can make your sticker and mounting surprisingly big differences.

https://preview.redd.it/zq1km0vfnnih1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=78717ff6e4315a7088f77cba434d55167508ce6d

1. Clean the glass properly (not just a quick wipe)

Many people install the sticker right after a basic wipe-down. The problem is that invisible residues from glass cleaners, dashboard protectants, fingerprints, or dust can reduce adhesion. A quick spray of isopropyl alcohol sold by Chemical Guy followed by a clean microfiber cloth usually works much better than water alone.

https://preview.redd.it/ufkn9aijnnih1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=b5204f33d9bfe5a55f6c7f3fd44d5fb6b3357fff

https://preview.redd.it/11ltedglnnih1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=d753f3472833c6db5e6706489f14855d030c048f

2. Take your time when applying the sticker

The biggest mistake is sticking the entire sheet onto the windshield at once. Start from one edge and slowly press it down while removing the backing film. This helps reduce trapped air and improves surface contact. If bubbles appear, use a plastic card or bank card to gently push them toward the edge.

https://preview.redd.it/3p2a1ea4onih1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=2237ff8bfb9c4e96975677531f1e1ef0baa15c29

https://preview.redd.it/aom7gea4onih1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=5e9c3f693444889feb67731a7791abfb6e617c3a

https://preview.redd.it/dhdjkda4onih1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac3f60afa77832893a6c2e75528d3878b6710184

3. Why use an electrostatic sticker instead of mounting directly with 3M adhesive?

Electrostatic stickers act as a removable layer between the windshield and the dash cam mount. Not everyone wants a permanent installation. They make repositioning easier, simplify upgrades, and help avoid adhesive residue on the glass. For drivers who change vehicles, test different mounting positions, or simply prefer a cleaner windshield, the trade-off is often worth it.

A few extra minutes during installation can make the difference between a mount that lasts through summer and one that slowly works its way loose after a few weeks.

4. How can you improve the success of bonding to ensure it lasts longer by DIY?

Adhesion can also be affected if the 3M adhesive isn't fully activated during installation or if the plastic mounting base doesn't make full contact with the windshield due to its curvature.

Thanks to our community member Maje Such-Ad3039 for sharing tips for advanced DIY enthusiasts. As an experienced PC builder and technician who has used many of our products, he suggested:

  • Gently heat the plastic mounting base with a hair dryer or a heat gun before installation so it better matches the curvature of the windshield.
  • Drill a small vent hole in the plastic mounting base to help release trapped air, which may improve the 3M adhesive bond.

https://preview.redd.it/ys8mh3pponih1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=7daaa9c855ed6658a61ba508d5f0e5452fdb6a8f

Please note that these methods involve modifying the mount and using a heat gun, so they're only recommended for users with DIY experience. If disassembling the device, Maje also recommends using Honeywell PTM7950, as conventional thermal paste can suffer from pump-out after repeated heat cycles.

Not Sure Which SIM Data Plan to Buy? Here's a 70mai SIM Card Simple Guide

To unlock the full range of 4G features, a SIM card is an essential component. Unlike mobile phones, a dash cam doesn't continuously upload video. Most of your monthly data usage comes from Live View and downloading recorded clips through the app. Here's a simple reference based on typical usage:

Light Use (Recommended: 8–10 GB/month)

If you usually :

  • Check Live View 2-3 times a week
  • Occasionally receive notifications
  • Rarely download videos

Then an 8–10 GB monthly data plan is more than enough for most users. This is actually how many people use their 4G dash cam. Checking on the vehicle occasionally for peace of mind rather than monitoring it every day.

Frequent Use (Recommended: Around 20 GB+/month)

If you:

  • Open Live View more than 5 times a week
  • Regularly download recorded videos to your phone
  • Frequently check on your vehicle while away

You'll likely want a 20 GB or larger monthly data plan to avoid running out of data before the end of the month.

So, the short answer is: it depends on how often you use remote viewing.

The more often you use remote viewing and download footage, the more data you'll consume. If you only check in occasionally, you can save money with a smaller plan. If you rely on your dash cam regularly while travelling or parking for long periods, a larger data plan will give you more flexibility.

70mai Guide Common Causes: Why Do Dash Cams Wear Out SD Cards So Quickly?

If your dashcam keeps saying: “SD card error” or “Please format card". It might not actually be the dashcam's issue. Unlike phones or cameras, dashcams constantly overwrite footage 24/7 in a loop. That means the card is being written to thousands of times every week. A few common reasons SD cards fail early:

  1. Using a normal SD card instead of a high-endurance card

A standard card made for photos or Nintendo Switch storage usually isn’t designed for constant video recording. That’s why “High-Endurance” cards exist. Dashcams need:

  • High endurance
  • Continuous writing stability
  • Heat resistance especially in the summer
  1. Heat kills cards faster than people think

Inside a parked car during summer, cabin temps can get insanely high. Even if the dashcam survives, the SD card is often the first thing to fail.

  • Heat + nonstop writing = shortened lifespan.
  1. 4K dashcams write WAY more data

Higher-bitrate recording usually means more detail, larger files, and more stress on the card. Cheap cards usually don’t last long under that workload. Especially with:

  • Dual-channel /Triple-channel recordings
  • HDR
  • Parking mode
  1. Most people never format their SD cards

Periodic formatting actually helps maintain recording stability. But some of you guys install an SD card at once and never touch it again. Overtime:

  • File fragmentation builds up
  • Corrupted sectors appear
  • Write speed becomes unstable
  1. TLC vs MLC matters more than marketing labels

Not all SD cards are built the same. Which matters a lot more for dashcams than peak read speed.

  • Some cards prioritise cheaper storage or larger capacity.
  • Others prioritise high-endurance, writing cycles, and long-term reliability.

Honestly, one of the most common “dashcam failures” is just a dying SD card. Choosing how to protect your SD card is also a way to extend its lifespan.

Your dashcam might actually be installed in the wrong spot!

A surprising number of dashcam video quality issues aren’t caused by the dashcam itself. Its mounting location causes them. Here are some common 70mai dashcam installation mistakes to avoid when installing for the first time:

https://preview.redd.it/5nc83gjnuadh1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=1abfa7557458ff557fee506c6b2e5487d0a8017d

1.Outside the windshield wiper area

If your dashcam sits outside the wiper sweep zone, rain and dirt stay on the glass right in front of the lens. A clean sensor can’t fix a dirty windshield. There will be:

  • blurry night footage
  • smeared headlights
  • harder plate capture in bad weather

2.Too close to the black dotted area

Those little black dots near the top of the windshield can actually affect image clarity and focus if the lens partially sees through them.

Some of you also accidentally mount the adhesive onto the dotted section, which can weaken the hold over time in hot weather.

3.Blocking sensors or safety equipment

A badly placed dashcam can sometimes interfere with visibility or sensor performance. Modern cars hide a lot behind the rearview mirror, like rain sensors, lane assist cameras or emergency braking systems.

4.Rear camera placement matters too

A lot of rear cams get mounted directly on defroster lines or too low on the rear glass at extreme angles. Which usually makes rear footage more glaring, with ashed-out headlights and poor night detail.

Even a high-quality dashcam still needs to be mounted in the right spot to ensure reliable protection!

New Feature Update: Customizable Emergency Video Sensitivity Is Here

One of the most common pieces of feedback is surprisingly simple: "Low sensitivity doesn't feel secure" or "High sensitivity records everything." The problem with traditional G-Sensor settings. That's why we've added Custom Emergency Video Sensitivity.

How does it work?

Instead of being limited to fixed presets, you can now fine-tune the trigger threshold based on your own needs. We’ve visualised the gear levels on a scale from 1 to 100, allowing you to freely choose a custom sensitivity value.

What does it actually help?

This allows you to find a balance between capturing important events and reducing unnecessary recordings. You now have more control over how your parking surveillance behaves to avoid the following:

  • Missed recordings caused by sensitivity being too low
  • False alerts caused by sensitivity being too high

This feature is rolling out starting with the 4K A810 Lite, with support for additional models planned in future updates. To access this feature, you need to update to the latest firmware version: 1.2.43ww. Enjoy the process of customisation!
