I do not know this person.

I'm thinking of taking a gap year to travel and take pictures, I've really enjoyed taking pictures for the time I've spent on it but I was wondering if anyone knew how to come into contact with potential "clients". I post my stuff on the typical social media and I'm down to do shoots for free to just build a portfolio, but I was wondering if there's any good sites people use to find people who want a shoot or something. I'm kinda new to everything ever and am contemplating just sending out emails to local stores to see if they want pictures for a poster or something... Is that the way to go? How do I get gigs without going through photography school? I know I'm not the best at taking pictures right now but like I said I'll do it for free at this point...
