How terrible do you allow your first draft to be?
Writing my first full length novel now. I’ve written plenty of short stories, usually with a handful of characters. Now I’m writjng a rather ambitious project with an ensemble cast.
I used to outline heavily, but never got anything done. Right now I’m trying pantsing for the first time, and am having a rough go of it. I’m getting a lot of writing done, but I’m not enjoying it very much since I think it’s of low quality.
I’m roughly 20,000 words in, and it’s shaping up to be a mess. Character motivations and plot structure are all over the place. Worst of all is the prose, which I feel is far too barebones for my taste.
I’m trying my best to keep going and get the plot out, but writing something I know isn’t good is really messing with my head. It’s making me question if it’s worth continuing, since I worry the core of the story may be bad instead of things that can be tweaked.
How bad do you allow your first draft to be? Is there anything you think I should consider before moving forward?
