Use of AI - lecturers aren't stupid

(Social sciences) Lecturer here. Probably a bit late, but I've just started marking and need to maybe vent / advise.

Honestly, a warning to anyone tempted to use AI. We're not stupid. Don't do it.

If I get a cohort of submissions (my class is ~60 students), I start seeing similarities to other essays I've read and marked. If all your references are just to the basic generic core books related to your topic, which also happen to be the ones on the reading list, or are the most commonly used ones in your field, and cover ideas that we've not specifically looked at on the course, I will notice that.

The same if they're just generically covering the ideas, and not offering analysis.

The same is true if your reference list looks remarkably similar to someone else's.

If your references look like those in the pictures, it's pretty obvious you've not written them...

If it's really blatant then we will take you through the academic misconduct process and you can fail, have a misconduct outcome on your record, and then be unlikely to get a (good) reference.

If it's more than likely, but not to the point it's blatant enough to bother with the misconduct process, then we'll give a basic pass. Do you want that, especially in your third year?

Plus, having taught you over various parts of your degree journey, I personally find it a bit rude, that you expect me to read and mark work that you've not even been bothered to write.

You're gambling with your futures, why not just do the work. You've paid enough to work towards the qualification, so why gamble with it?

If you don't feel confident enough to write a strong essay, talk to us! It's our job to help you! Or student support services, there's whole teams to help you with writing and all the features of how to do it and do it well.
