Vacation Bible School

Well, its summer time. Many churches have VBS around this time of year. However there are conservative churches that dont believe in VBS. Like why is VBS controversial in the Church of Christ. I get that obviously it wasnt in the first century. Also how common is it for VBS to include a Musical? I have heard some old timers say that VBS is a waste of money and the money should be put towards door-knocking.

Parsonage

Hi yall,

Back in the day many Churches of Christ had a parsonage. None of the churches I have been to have ever had one but my dad's old church when he was growing up did. What did your church think about parsonages and did they ever have them? Parsonages are not subject to property tax in many states. I get the impression that parsonages are typically a thing of the past in the Church of Christ but I dont know.Thanks.

Did Odessa ever have a Waffle House?

Hi yall,

Did Odessa have a Waffle House? I remember going to a breakfast food place in Odessa in the 90's that had a yellow and black sign and I remember being bummed out there was no pancakes. Gemini said there was no Waffle House in Odessa and that I may be confusing it with Kettle. Thanks in advance.

Steve Diggs No Debt Seminars.

Hi yall,

Are any of yall familiar with the No Debt No Sweat money seminars put on by Steve Diggs at Churches of Christ and other venues across the country? I came across him and his advice seems very similar to Dave Ramsey complete with no debt and mutual funds. Have you attended any of his seminars at any Churches of Christ. I was not too impressed.

Oaths and Affirmations

Hi yall,

I know in the Bible Jesus said let yes be yes and your no be no...I always took this to mean to not swear oaths. How literal do you think He was being on this because there are various times where we have to legally take oaths or affirmations like jury duty maybe some tax forms and some background checks.

And also voter registration requires it in my state. Do you thinks oaths are sinful and if they are do you think affirmations are okay? I dont know what to do in situations like this...My parents dont really think he was being that literal on this but I dont know....also I think you have to take oaths to maybe be a doctor or serve in the armed services so is taking oaths or affirmations in these kind of situations morally okay?

Weddings

Weddings in the Church of Christ tend to be different than other weddings. I know at traditional CofC weddings instruments were not allowed at the weddings even though it is not a worship service. I never understood why though. Also drinking and dancing are not allowed at traditional Church of Christ weddings obviously even though there was alcohol at the wedding at Cana.

It seems like the bride doesnt always get to choose how she wants the wedding to be because in my experience the family defers to the rules. Also have yall ever heard of people in the Church of Christ getting married at looser churches or denominational churches to get around some of these restrictions?

Requirements to join the Non Institutional Churches of Christ from the mainline Church of Christ

Hi yall,

I joined a non institutional church not too long ago. The elders interviewed me as a requirement to join my local NI church. I heard that there have been some rather strict requirements to join the NI churches from a mainline Church of Christ.

I have heard that sadly some NI churches require new members from the mainline churches to confess the " sin" of being in a mainline Church of Christ in order to join their NI church. I disagree strongly with that NI practice....Have any of yall heard of something similar or even stricter? Luckily me and my family didnt run into those strict requirements.

Hi yall,'

Have any of yall ran into people in the Church of Christ who were against listening to instrumental Christian music or hymns because they thought it could lead to instrumental music in worship or more acceptance of it.....My dad is that way.

I have heard of some people only listening to A Capella music at home because they are so against instruments. How common is this view in the Church of Christ. I grew up attending a middle of the road church and now go to a NI church. Going to Christian Concerts was discouraged when I was growing up. Sorry if this is a weird question.
