Is the bar/restaurant posted opening time convention different in the US?

I was reading a post on one of the hospitality subreddits, very US oriented, where a server was complaining about a large group coming in 15 minutes before closing time. The comments all said that the group was in the right as the posted opening hours indicate last seating.

Everywhere I've worked and patronised here in the UK, I feel like the opening hours indicate at what time you'll be kicked out, and as such I won't go to a bar 15 minutes before close with the understanding that they'd have already called last drinks and will have stopped serving in preparation to turn the lights on and start asking people to leave at closing time.

What are your thoughts?
