Just went to the dermatologist yesterday and infos about fin

Hey everyone,

I finally went to a dermatologist yesterday to talk about my hairline concerns. I’m 21 and still have pretty dense hair overall, but compared to my ID photo from when I was 18, there’s definitely some noticeable maturing/recession at the temples. Last winter I also went through a pretty relatively strong shedding phase, which is what pushed me to finally get it checked instead of just ignoring it.

The derm seemed experienced and immediately brought up finasteride. However, he advised against oral fin because, according to him, sexual side effects are real and he also believes Post-Finasteride Syndrome is real. He also mentioned there are some things to consider regarding prostate cancer screening while using finasteride (not that it causes cancer, but that it can affect certain markers).

In the end, he prescribed me topical finasteride instead. The problem is that one bottle only lasts about a month and costs around 70€ here in Germany. As a student, I honestly can’t really afford that long term, especially if this is something I’d potentially use for years.

My main goal isn’t even regrowth (if hair comes again due to fin that would be an add on). I just want to maintain what I currently have and avoid further loss if possible because it im satisfied with my hairline.

Now I’m kind of stuck. Hearing a professional’s opinion was important to me, but at the same time I’m unsure what to do next. I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts, experiences, or advice, especially from people who’ve been in a similar situation. Im also interested about more information about fin.

Thank you all!
