Rules question: discarding handslot items with arcane enlightenment in play

Rules question: as far as I know you can't just choose to discard a card in play. You can push an asset out of your hand by playing a different asset over it ofcourse, but only if all your hand slots are full (if you have only a knife in play, you can't discard it when you play a magnifying glass, for example).

So here was our situation:

Min thi pan has in play:

-Arcane enlightenment, giving her a third hand slot, that can only be used for tomes.

-Magnifying glass (hand)

-necronomicon (hand, tome)

-dream diary (hand, tome).

Now the player wants to do the following:

-Rerurn magnifying glass to his playerhand, via its fast action, leaving 2 items in play, taken up 2 hand slots.

-Play the magnifying glass again, discarding the necronomicon. His reasoning was that he had 2 hand slots filled with the tomes, and a third one, empty but that can only hold a tome, where the magnifying glass can't fit, so he can drop the necronomicon for it.

In roleplaying storyterms:

Minthi holds a magnifying glass in one hand and a dream diary in the other, a necronomicon hovers in front of her, being held up and pages flipping through her enlightenment of arcane power.

She pockets the magnifying glass, catching the necronomicon out of the air into her hand, then drops the necronomicon on the ground as she takes out her magnifying glass again.

Ofcourse in rokeplaying terms there is no reason you shouldnt be able to just drop an item...

Anyway, what the verdict? Allowed or not?
