Rebuilding 80s Technics 160W RMS 3 way speakers with 15" Bass speakers. Trying car speakers for mid range just because they were at hand.

TLDNR: An incredible improvement. Still need to cut bigger holes and mount properly. What can go wrong?

My amp is a beefy 100 Watt Onkyo A-RV401.

The Speakers are Technics SB-K400. 160W, 8 Ohm, Crossover: 2000 Hz, 6000 Hz.

Replacing the Bass Speaker.

I just replaced the original 8 Ohm 15 inch bass speaker with an 8 Ohm GRS replacement. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00454W3BG

The GRS is twice the weight and twice the inductance as the original. No other listed speakers came close to those numbers if they are even relevant. The magnets and voice coil is massive compared to the original.

It still seemed like a random choice. The new bass speaker sounds great and seems to carry more of the mid range than the original. The overall mid range of this speaker in the original configuration is still very weak.

 Replacing the Mid Range.

The original mid range speaker is marked 0.8 Watt, 4 Ohms. Not even a whole Watt.

I was hoping to find a simple drop in replacement upgrade. I had no idea where to start. I have 4 Sony XS-R1645 car speakers. 50W RMS, Peak 270W, 4 Ohm. I decided to try them out. I am leaving the original 20W 8 Ohm tweeter in place.

Just hanging it in place with a wood screw to try it out, it sounds amazing. Tomorrow I enlarge the midrange hole and mount everything up proper?

Is there anything that can go wrong with using the car speaker for a mid range?

Will the crossover unit hold up?

Which Deoxit to use?

I just purchased a vintage 80s 100 Watt Fisher amp. the exact same one I had as a kid for my DJ business. I also purchased a Pioneer SX-205 for when the Fisher eventually fails.

The Fisher has 7 sliding potentiometers.

The Pioneer is 1995 to 2000.

Amazon offers numerous Deoxit products at ridiculous prices. I also think the needle applicator is the way to go.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am checking all my old electronics to put together my system. I am looking for a way to feed CDs ripped to FLAC to my analog system. This requires the player to have high quality Digital to Audio conversion and amplification.

I dug up an old Lenovo T420 ThinkPad. An i-5 25** processor. Probably Win XP originally but now running Linux mint. I plugged my $13 corded Sony headphone into the headphone jack. Holy mackeral! All the music the artist created was there. I will be using this for my digital to analog audio front end. ThinkPads were the high end no cost spared for the corner office executive. The volume output was much higher than my cheap little DAP player but both reproducing the music accurately.

ThinkPads are bulletproof and rebuildable and can be had for under $100.
