Vibe check on Sappho Books in Glebe

Vibe check on Sappho Books in Glebe

Edit: it appears our vibe assessment may have been isolated or incorrect, which is good to hear!

So my partner and I were in Sydney for a lil holiday recently and we ducked into Sappho Books, Cafe, and Bar in Glebe and... frankly, the vibes felt really off. I do want to add a strong caveat that this is from a very short visit (like less than 5mins before we nope-d outta there), but I want to check if this is an isolated experience or not.

There was a pride flag hanging up outside, but the vibe we got from the person behind the counter felt like it came with a bit of venom compared to how they greeted others (notably, patrons that weren't necessarily visibly trans.) There was one shelf with explicitly lesbian books, but I note it was not visible from the door at all.

I dunno, felt really off seeing "rare Neil Gaiman books" as a bit of a selling point. I could just be flat out wrong and this isn't a queer space, as looking at the website there's not much that says yes we are queer owned / friendly, but with a name like Sappho Books you'd hope???

I dunno, I guess I just wanna check if we've read things wrong (we both have anxiety lmao)
