Am I In The Wrong Here?
TLDR: Starbucks marking me as NCNS after I was hospitalized and had someone (my sister) call out for me
I need some outside perspective because I genuinely don’t know if I’m being unreasonable or if this is actually unfair.
I work at Starbucks and also had another job at a school working with special needs kids. My schedule has been extremely intense (basically back-to-back work most days), and I’ve also had some serious health issues recently.
Last Saturday I was hospitalized and unable to work my shift. Because I physically couldn’t call myself, my sister called my Starbucks store to let them know I was on the way to hospital and could not come in. I assumed that would be enough because the store was clearly informed of my situation.
Today, my manager told me I am being marked as a “no call no show” because:
-I did not personally call in
-I did not check back in afterward
-I did not call within a certain time frame (2 hours before shift)
The issue is: I was never told that I personally had to be the one to call in, or that someone calling on my behalf during an emergency wouldn’t count. I thought the important part was just making sure the store knew I couldn’t come in, which we did.
Now I’m being told this is an NCNS and it could affect my job, even though I was literally in the hospital.
I’m really confused and frustrated because from my point of view:
-This was a medical emergency
-The store was notified
I had no idea there were extra steps I needed to take while hospitalized
I’m not trying to avoid responsibility, but this feels really unfair given the situation.
Am I missing something here? Is this actually how Starbucks policy works, or am I being misclassified?
Any advice would help because I honestly don’t know how to handle this.
