Penelope
I've never seen your face in full
"Verona!" you said,
and I look in astonishment.
I picture you painting your nails red,
reminiscent of wine or velvet.
I see gradients of gold on your head,
shades of blue and black from behind.
I see begonias in your stead,
raindrops staggered in a line.
Or I see you turning to your right.
Sets of eyelashes jump at the light
and a nose blooms out of a bed
of pale skin, rosacea,
and fine tangled hair.
Beautiful hair, beautiful,
that obscures the rest.
"Outside!" you said.
Your crowd follows within the minute.
Jealousy,
like the jealousy of a spirit
now that its dead.
So long,
it's been so long
since I chose to wait
to introduce myself.
