Review #3: Lasso Hotel American Straight Whiskey 18 Year

I pulled the trigger today. Thanks to Just_error_2690 for the inspiration. I will reiterate his review from a day or two ago. I purchased this today for 119.99 after a couple of posters told me it was a great price. This is a 99C 1MB mashbill and although not titled it is a light whiskey. First, I adore PALW18. And while the Lasso proof is lower, I don't think that I have ever had a pour continue to transform in the glass like this one does. The change is incredible. After the vapor continues to burn off, the ghost corn surfaces more than the Penelope and is present on the nose and palette and finish (after several minutes). The experience is similar to the Penelope. Syrupy feel, sweet, Cinnabon roll at first nose, then suddenly orange zest. Amazing. Then Karo light corn syrup on the palette. It has nice legs on the glass although fails to leave the opaque burn residue that the hazmat Penelope does. I purchased Penelope ALW from 89.99 to 109.99 and while the Lasso cost is higher, is worth the purchase. I would purchase again and may return for a backup.

Im going to open a PALW18 and do a blind.

Anyway regrets for the details, an Amazing sweet, sugary, rich syrupy corn desert pour.

Review 2: Seelbachs Private Reserve Wheated

This is a private reserve wheated Kentucky Straight bourbon. Batch 062 @107 Proof. Mashbill of 70C 21W 9MB blend of Green River distilled spirits of 5-7 years bottled in Jacksonville.

This bottle was opened less than 30 days ago and is 75% consumed. This pour rested in a wide mouth glencairn for 3 mins.

LEGS: Impressive adhere to the glass indicating an oily, thick syrup associated with a well crafted product

NOSE: Unremarkable. Pleasant. Dried fruit. Canned Figs. Prunes. Medjool dates. No ghost corn vapor. No trace of sweet wheat other than the sugary fruit.

PALATE: Remarkable! Quality. Craftsmanship. Uniqueness. Original flavor immediately noticed south of the proof. Quality, medium-heavy, syrup mouth feel. The sip is a sweet spoonful from a jar of homemade fig preserves.

FINISH: Velvet, silky texture with a heavy syrup slow drip down the throat whose sugar coats and irritates the throat slightly. No proof evidence throughout the sip.

SUMMARY: If this distiller was aiming for an Antique 107 mimic then mission accomplished (almost). Sweet grain finish with a quality heavy syrup feel. This proof never emerges and denied the pour some character otherwise present in Antique 107. Im having a good experience with this $49.99 bottle. There is an obvious quality and uniqueness that deserves respect and appreciation.

RATING: 6/10.

I would purchase this bottle again, but the blend is a bit of a question for me. It is a decent sub for Antique107 of you can find either.

Review 1: Four Roses OESO

This is a 9 year old 124.4 Proof OESO recipe. This is a store pic from an established Mississippi Gulf Coast store. Four Roses offers 10 different recipes with the B offering a lower corn higher rye and the E offering a higher corn lower rye mashbill. I printed a cheat sheet to ID the recipes in the stores. I tend toward their lower rye recipes. The recipe approach and offering is unique in the bourbon world and FR is listed as the #8 issued DSP on the registry. The recipe approach provides the uniqueness and individuality not offered from other distilleries.

NOSE: Relative to the recipe: So, the "O" offers "Rich Fruit" and delivers bananas that have aged on the kitchen counter for a week and over ripened. I let this rest in a Stolie for 5 mins. The banana nose suppresses the proof vapor you would expect in the nasal cavity. It immediately insinuates sophistication expected from a 9 year and immediately proves a professionally, distilled and aged product. The nose excites the senses of a uniqueness that demands palate.

PALATE: syrup, heavy thick syrup indicative of an experienced master Distiller. Heavy, thick 9 year velvet mouth feel. Sweet, over-ripe, soft mushy banana behind the peel. Heavy sugar of dried fruit, perhaps prune (plum), apricot and golden raisin. More later.

FINISH: Proof! The suppressed proof emerges in the finish complimenting the heavy sugary syrup mouth. The banana remains inescapable.

SUMMARY: In this world of caramel and baking spice, I for one am searching for a uniqueness and individuality. The Four Roses 9 year OESO recipes delivers. I had been searching for an aged 4R store pic for some time and am so glad that I discovered this one. I adore the 4R recipe offerings and variety and choice they offer. It provides a sincere honest pursuit in the hunt, any of which will not disappoint.

RATING: 8.5

I recommend this recipe and would purchase again. It provides a departure from the everyday pour. It never leads with corn or a ghost corn vapor. The recipe hides and suppresses the mashbill in such a mature unique manner as a departure from the everyday bourbon pour.

Feelin' Corny

JH&S offers such a unique flavor from their own homegrown 4 grains leading with their heirloom corn. You know, I can offer the nose but let's jump straight to the taste. Unique. Individualistic. Corn. Not dent corn. Heirloom corn. Ok, the nose is exactly like sticking your head inside a movie theater popcorn machine. But the taste is like standing on wood planks in a dark, dusty co-op feed store with your grandpa. Rich, buttery, dried corn. You might get the caramels, the cherries, the dried fruits. But you will definitely get the corn. The corn is what this distillery set out to provide and it delivers. Not the sweetness of the wheat or spicyness of the rye. The corn leads the other grains to such a unique bourbon perfectly appropriate for an autumn harvest evening.

Best Bang?

From Bartons and likely a slightly chiseled down version of their 1792 125 Full Proof. Folks, this is likely the best overall value in Bourbon. This 120proof 1L is 28.99. NAS. But this is buttery, nutty, sweet, syrupy, mature, sophisticated, mature, greatness with an overall traditional, Kentucky Bourbon vapor nose and heavy mouth. The color is so beautiful and the cost so inexpensive I decantered it. Its a great sipper but at this price pour it in a styrophoam 44oz cup and pour in some 7Up.

Damn if these two aren't related. Both delicious and close in every way.

Nabbed This One Today

I've been hunting it and found it in the most unlikely of places. Elizabeth McCall, Master Distiller.

REVIEW. I enjoy double Oaked bourbons. I like the oily mouth feel, the heavy syrup viscosity and that oak flavor. Frankly, folks, I'm not really sure why WR releases different Double Oakeds. This is close to the WR DD Oaked with a higher proof and less cost. Glad I found this Single Barrel version I've been hunting but it's a close experience to the DD Oaked just not as heavy or oily, higher proof at less cost. You have to decide Proof? Oakiness? Price? When choosing between these two. Decent legs, Nutella nose, traditional oak bourbon palatte with a humble heat. Competes with Peerless 2O

Full Line Up

I procured the Benchmark Rye. Probably the best all around bourbon lineup for the money. Its dumb, I know, but WTH.

An Extraordinary Pour

I would love for this product to go mainstream. The mashbill appears to be 70C 21R 9MB.

The nose is so subtly sugar sweet with more ghost oak vapor than corn. The rye might suppress that ghost corn vapor from dominance and provides a slight hint of funkyness. County fair cotton candy, overbaked sugar cookies with burned bottoms and seasoned dry wood, subtle grain. The viscosity is a medium syrup with decent legs on the glass evident of the proof. The syrup is light on the tongue and mouth, classic rye recipe, spice, subtle pepper, distinct, unique, tasteful, fresh grains. The heat and the pepper meld together so tastefully. The finish is clever, it hovers and escapes clean with little or no after taste, awaiting the next sip. The juice is aged in Purple Toad wine casks before being transferred to charred oak. This pour identifies closely with some of the wonderful Bardstown creations.

No Regrets

My one and only Blantons was a Gold. Glad I experienced it, and not sad it's gone. It was just OK. Anyone feel the same about Blantons?

I Mean, I'll Finish It...but

119.5P Barrel Proof 95R 5B. 7yrs in oak + 1yr in Lairds apple brandy barrels. This is a MGP aged in Bardstown. Purchased today but this bottle is a year old. The nose has a nice subtle apple vapor. The pour has a decent syrup consistency with visible legs on the glass. The palate is a high quality traditional rye, with spice and an age that conveys some complexity. The apple is subtle and a nice escape for something different and unique. The apple pairs very well with the traditional rye spice. The syrup weight is nice in the mouth and throat and proves the care taken with the aging and concept. The finish however leads with the proof and hangs around with a funkyness that I can only imagine is from the brandy. It is a nice unique pour and no regrets purchasing it. I'll finish it but there are just so many great ryes out there at $20 less to have to endure the apple brandy finish. Just my opinion. 5.5

What gives? Is Dickel not appreciated among whiskey drinkers?

Any opinions?
