Help y'all
Hey everyone, looking for some genuine career guidance here.
I'm 21M, based in Andhra Pradesh. I currently work as a Gramin Dak Sevak Branch Post Master (GDS BPM) in the Indian postal department. For those who don't know what that means, it's basically running a small post office branch single handedly with targets for PLI, RPLI, IPPB accounts, SB/RD/TD accounts and more. The pay is modest and the workload is honestly overwhelming for what it pays.
My qualifications:
\- BCA graduate
\- Currently pursuing MBA on the side
\- No prior IT work experience
\- Basic Python knowledge (self-learning)
The situation:
I recently gave an interview at Cognizant for a Service Desk role and I'm waiting for results. If I get the offer I'm seriously considering leaving my government job and joining.
My concern is that I have no IT experience and I'd be starting completely from scratch at service desk level. But staying at GDS until my promotion exam eligibility in 2030 also feels unsustainable.
Questions I have:
Is service desk at a company like Cognizant a decent starting point for a BCA graduate with no IT experience?
How realistic is it to move from L1 service desk to L2 or analyst roles within 2 years?
Is leaving a government job for a service desk role a bad idea long term?
Any certifications I should prioritize early on — I've heard ITIL is a good start?
Any advice from people who have been in similar situations would be really helpful. Especially from anyone who started at service desk and managed to grow from there.
Thanks in advance.
