It was just called "Tape"

You know how things escalate ? Started to swap the motor. But engine compartment needed de-rusting and paint. To do that, I had to remove the wiring. To do THAT, I had to remove the entire dashboard from the car. So while I have this dash and all the wiring apart, I need to make a decision about the top of the line 1980 technology EIGHT TRACK Tape Player + Radio.

I've made a promise to the Automotive Gods that "I'm not cutting anything on this car". Someday someone can restore it exactly as Ford/Mercury intended.

Which leads to my radio issue. Its not really a "single DIN".

What we have here is a 4 inch by 2 inch rectangle.

RetroSound makes a unit that fits. That's the bolt in and period look solution. Very spendy, tho.

I'd love to put in a little modern solution with Android Auto and a slim touch screen. But it seems the 4x2" thing is a challenge. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ?

Also - what do folks put in for a modern quality speaker ? These seem to be 4.25 inches across the holes - which is weird.

Ok, Whats the Secret ? Headlight Switch '80

I give up ! Asking the community for help. 1980 turbo4. How do I get the headlight switch knob or shaft out of the switch so that I can then unscrew the bezel, pull the switch out, and un-do the electrical connector ? I've been trying to undo the connector from underneath and its not happening. There a guy on YouTube who just yanks the knob off, and that not happening for me either. It works fine and looks nice, but I'm trying to get the dash out of the car.

1979-86 (??) Sterring Column Firewall Sealing Boot ?

I have a bad feeling that I know the answer; but does anyone know where I can buy a steering column firewall sealing boot for a 1980 Fox Body ? LMR has a 5.0 Resto part for the 1987 & up models ... but the website specifically says it won't fit my car. Anyone know a source to help me find a new one ? The hole around the column is torn and enlarged, and I'd rather not have wet toes when it rains ... not to mention ruin the floor carpet.

At Cars & Coffee Today

A lesser seen 4door Fox Body. Nice 85.5 SVO. And a serious Mustang drag car which was very well executed.

1984 SVO on BringATrailer

There's a 1984 one owner SVO on BringATrailer and it is "no reserve". I think someone is going to be very happy a day from now. Thought this community would like the heads-up. I'm already too deep in "projects" or I'd have been very interested myself.

Broke down and did it Properly

Everyone was very complementary of their Flaming River steering rack, so I saved up my nickles and have now invested in one for my "80 Capri. Stock 20:1 ... car doesn't have power steering. Still need to source some mounting bushings.

Seen at the Detroit Grand Prix

Weird. 2 Capris, zero Foxbody 'Stangs. But both Mercurys were very, very nice. The Motorcraft one has some sort of relationship to this race from 40 years ago. Enjoyed the full car corral. Ford well represented, as you'd expect.

4eye 1980 Mercury Capri. RS 4cyl Turbo.

Manual steering rack. Showing its age for sure. Steering has always felt sloppy, and figured it would be the rag joint. But no ! - its the rack ... there's lots of play.

eBay & Amazon have lots of manual racks in the low $100 range, but these scare me unless folks out there can recommend positive experiences with a particular brand or model.

Flaming River is clearly the top level route of choice, but wow they are pricey. Is the feel and responsiveness that many multiples better ?

RockAuto seems to have no manual racks at all.

Can anyone recommend a middle ground on price & quality ?

Also ... would appreciate thoughts on steering ratio. I don't even know what my car has currently.

Thanks in adcance.
