Conflicting guidelines on slat spacing
So I know that 2-3 inch gap between wooden slats (preferably on the lower end for latex/foam) is what has been recommended by most posts here. But if for whatever reason that's not possible (e.g. buying a new frame would cost more than the bargain bin mattress itself), what can you actually get away without causing damage?
Actual manufacturer tolerances on the upper end seem to be all over the place (many don't even have separate guideliens for foam vs hybrid mattress)
Sealy - Warranty says 3" slats at most 4" apart
Serta - 2" between slats
Purple - 3.5" between slats
Saatva - 4" between slats
Avocado - 5" (!) between slats
Boring mattress - 3.5" gap at most, recommends 2-3" gap
I also have read that today most "innerspring" mattresses use pocket coils, which seem to be only at most 2-2.5" in diameter, meaning that > 5" which could have worked for old-school continuous coil innerspring mattresses are insufficient for these newer hybrid mattresses that need closer to flat continuous support to prevent sagging due to unsupported pocket coils. I can also guess that softer/less dense foam requires stricter tolerances, especially for these single-sided mattresses which may not have much padding between the coil and the slats.
So putting all that together, my question for my own specific scenario is:
How bad is a 3.5" gap between slats (with individual slats of 3" width) on a twin mattress ? The mattress is an el cheapo "S-brand" medium firmness: serta classic.
Classified as "innerspring" (although it seems all "innersprings" have a lot of foam these days). Despite being medium firm, the springs were quite pliant and squishy out of the box, and I assume they use cheapest foam with minimal padding on bottom.
I am very lightweight, so load is not going to be an issue, nor can I feel any "slats" through the mattress. My only worry is that it seems the pocket coils are basically not going to be supported at all in the 3.5" gap, can they be "knocked over" or break in any way? Will this cause them to get squeaky?
