Moving from bass pedalboard to HX Stomp XL - Setup Help
I love the sound of my board, but, I want more flexibility, particularly when gigging. For example, for the different fuzz sounds between Garbage, Cage the Elephant, and Muse, I'm constantly fiddling with my muff, and trying to get correct levels.
So, I bought a HX Stomp XL - And now I'm trying to mirror my existing setup, but I'm running into trouble!
So, first, my actual setup from the pic: Tuner -> Comp -> Fuzz -> Fulltone for small boost or small crunch boost (rarely used) -> Zoom (only chorus, only occasionally) -> BDDI xlr. That means my normal tone is comp -> (maybe fuzz) -> bddi
First try with the hx, I've been playing with the ZeroAmp Bass DI and the different SVT models. I'm using a TRS cable to xlr for balanced output to my PA.
The pedalboard is much more PRESENT. Not sure if it's just volume, but the HX seems quiet. My BDDI does have a 20db cut for XLR, and when I engage that, it's closer to the HX volume, but the HX still seems muted / in a can / quiet.
So, the questions:
- What should be my starting point? The one patch I made is not very good, lol. I'm looking for something in stompbox mode where I can turn on and off a boost or fuzz or chorus, etc.
- I'm keeping the strobostomp, because I like an always on tuner. Should I keep the fuzz, or are there good fuzz settings? I like the envelope filter on the muff for tones, but, that's easy enough to split into two. Or should I put the muff in the effects loop?
- Any idea on output level / punchiness / etc? I did notice that some of the effects patches WERE loud, just not mine, lol.
I'm looking for a fast way to get jamming with something that sounds good -- I can dial in effects / fuzz / etc later. Any recommendations on sites with good bass patches / irs / whatevs? I don't mind paying!
